Knowing this mattress is so breathable makes me feel so much better! The mattress is firm enough but comfortable too. The cover is easy to zipper off and on. I’d definitely suggest it to friends.

100% breathable. We did a face smush test to make sure. It’s well worth the price. No other mattress can offer this protection against SIDS. Make sure you also get the Newton brand waterproof protector or you’ll void the whole point of the mattress.

EDIT/UPDATE: I ended up buying this mattress instead. It has no smell, it cost less, and my baby sleeps soundly through the night:

Emily Crib Mattress, GOTS Organic Cotton and Natural Eco-Wool, Two-Sided, Made in USA by My Green Mattress

So the reviews that say it reeks of chemicals? I thought, ‘must have been a bad batch’. Nope.

THIS THING REEKS. I opened it up and the smell hit me like I had walked into a Sherwin-Williams paint store. I took it into the spare bedroom to let it offgas for a while and it stunk up the whole room in about 30 minutes. Now you might say, who’s this guy, some sort of superhuman with a giant schnozz? I’m afraid not; if anything I usually don’t smell things and my wife is the sensitive one. She can’t even walk in the room where I put the mattress.

I’m going to let it offgas for a few more days and see what happens, but yeah. I don’t have a lot of high hopes for this overpriced plastic mattress. I can’t believe they market this as “Beyond Organic” — but I guess it is, since that phrase is meaningless. You know what else is “Beyond Organic”? Anything that’s not Certified Organic!

“FOOD GRADE POLYMER” == PLASTIC. You know what else is made of “food grade polymer”? Plastic utensils, plastic cups, the pitcher on your blender, your popcorn popper, whatever. It’s all just plastic (polyethelyne pad and polyester cover, according to the mattress tag).

After inspecting the product, I’d wager it costs them about $50 to make one of these. Add up how many plastic forks you’d need to buy to reach the same mass, and then add on a cheap matress cover. $50 might be high actually.

NOT FULLY MADE IN USA — The tag says, “Filling made in China, Cover made in China, Filled and finished in the USA.” The company says that only the cover in made in the China, and the filler is made in the USA, contrary to the tag. Whatever. Still, even if the injection molding is done in the USA and then they let it dry and stuff it in a cover, that is NOT what “Proudly made in the USA” (quote from the Amazon page of this product) should mean.

All in, it’s a 100% plastic, partially-Chinese-manufactured mattress that stinks of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the plastic manufacturing process as soon as you open the bag. That’s fine, but if that’s what I wanted I could get one of those at WalMart for $49.99 (Graco Premium Crib mattress, or the Serta Nightair) or $59.97 (Sealy Baby Ortho Rest).

3/13/18 — Edited for clarity regarding manufacturer’s comments on where their product is made. I still think this mattress is a complete rip-off however. I’m sure this company’s making absolutely insane profit margins on these things, and their marketing pitch (‘beyond organic’ and ‘proudly made in the usa’ etc.) is highly questionable. And, my mattress still stank like a plastic factory when I opened it, so there’s that.

Great mattress. Our son is a face down tummy sleeper so this has been great for putting my mind at ease. I’ve tested with the cover it comes with, plus the waterproof cover added and a sheet as well and I can still breath through it with my face pressed hard against this mattress.

It did come with a slight plastic/chemical odour as some have noted. But I cleaned the mattress as per instructions. I put it into the shower and rinsed it off with some vinegar. Also machine washed the covers. No smell after that. Cleaning it was easy as well.

It is pricey but after seeing for myself how breathable it is I am okay with the cost. I just hope it will hold up over time.

I am a bit disappointed by this expensive mattress. Long time spent reading and searching for a non toxic mattrress… and it smells so much that is impossible to stay in the room. I don’t understand why only 1% of the reviews mention the smell, it is hard to not noticing it
So I Sent the mattress back and Ordered a new one that smelled bad as well. I called the company and they ensured me that is not supposed to have any odor so they convinced me to return it again and buy a third time from their website (where it was on sale,20% off! Not bad!).
The third mattress come and…. same smell of plastic. I think thst’s how it is, that polymer used for the corr has definitely an odor. Is that odor “toxic”? Who knows… i would feel better if it wasn’t smelling BUT if you wash the mattress it mostly goes away. So i decided to keep it for these reasons:
    1) it is really washable! You put it in the shower and it’s quickly washed and dries pretty fast
    2) it is breathable for real
    3) i like that it’s made just of that polymer, that’s all. And this material should be a “safe plastic”
    4) it is firm but seems comfortable to me (i wish my baby could talk and tell me)

Another small complain that i have is the cover. The matress cover is 100% polyester and they recommend to not put any brf sheet. Well, do they expect me to let my baby sleep directly on that without cotton sheets? For 300$ they should come up with a better cover at least because that materiall in addition to be polyester is not soft at all

Our baby makes really bad decisions.

He prefers to sleep on his face. Not head tilted slighty to the left or the right – he sleeps square on his tiny, baby face. We tried moving him – again and again and again and failed miserably each time. We tried explaining that his choices were poor, but that also ended in failure. We tried reasoning, and failed before we started.

I found this through Google at 3am with search terms, “baby face sleeper” or something equally desperate. I bought it immediately, it arrived 2 days later, and it works.

I know my kid will continue to make questionable choices, and I will have to continue to try and find solutions. This is the best solution for our face-sleeper.

Thanks, Newton. Our baby can now certainly breathe, which means I can sleep.

Update: we’ve had the mattress for about nine months and still love it. Kiddo sleeps well; it’s very cool because of the air circulation, which is perfect for Florida; and it is very easy to clean, and I’ve cleaned both the cover and the interior portion. I continue to recommend this to any parents who are worried about their goofy, little face sleepers.

My daughter really likes this mattress and I find she really develops her motor skills on this mattress. I also love the breathability. I never pick her up with any sweat on her. I also like how light it is for changing the cover purposes.

I love this mattress and the peace of mind that it comes with. Our 20 month old daughter passed away several months ago in her sleep of unknown causes (SUDC – Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood – similar to SIDS but in a child older than 12 months). Her little sister was only 16 days old when she passed. I know that her mattress had NOTHING to do with her passing but I wanted to do everything possible to find peace of mind with our new little one. We purchased the mattress and she has been sleeping great on it. We also tested it when we first got it and it is completely breathable and firm for a baby. I have also noticed our new little sweetie doesn’t get so hot while sleeping. I HIGHLY recommend this mattress!

Love this mattress. Our boy runs hot so the breathability keeps him from overheating. He also is a stomach sleeper so o have peace of mind knowing he can breathe through it. They suggest just sleeping on the cover but definitely not comfortable and is slippery so we paired it with the Burt’s bees crib sheets and it’s still breathable. Very lightweight makes changing the sheet painless.
So reviewers said it had a smell when it arrived, there was a slight smell, kind of like new clothes have but I washed the cover and it was gone.

This gave us peace of mind. Our baby is a tummy sleeper and does not care that there is a “Back to Sleep” campaign. We got this mattress because of the design. It’s like a big plastic loofa and you can breath through it easily without restriction. It is not meant to be used with a fitted sheet or mattress cover. There is a water proof mattress cover you
can buy separately and we tried it. You can breath through that too. We got the Muslim fitted sheet because that is breathable and the only recommended sheet for this mattress. I put a flannel and a cotton sheet in and you can’t breath through either.
This mattress is great and super easy to clean. Love it.

I think that it’s washable and breathable. I was cosleeping and the baby transitioned and slept in this with no issue from the first night. He seems comfortable and since he became a stomach sleeper at 6 months I am not as concerned letting him sleep on his tummy with this mattress since it’s breathable.
I’m using the Burt bees organic crib sheets on it and they fit great.
It’s also light so not the biggest deal that I have to lift each edge above bumper pads to change sheets. I would recommend this mattress , it took me a long time to figure out what to buy and I’m happy that I went with a cheaper crib and a more expensive mattress.
    ***update***
My son is now 20 months old and this mattress is still fantastic. He turned into the biggest vomit machine and being able to zip the mattress cover off throw it into the wash has been everything! I can literally hose down the mattress too when needed. He can get really warm when sleeping and I can feel that he sleeps cooler on this compared to his baby bjorn travel crib when we travel. $400 is a lot but when I look back at some of the money I wasted on baby items this still remains a smart purchase. And since I’m determined to never let him cosleep with me again , there have been some nights I have gotten into this crib to settle him down and fell asleep and I even found it comfortable!

This mattress stinks. Like most of the parents who end up finding this mattress, I found it after weeks of research for the most breathable crib mattress on the market. Unfortunately, it has a terrible chemical smell that hits you as soon as you take it out of the box. The smell didn’t go away after airing it out. Every time I caught a whiff, I would get an instantaneous headache. The smell was not because of “off-gassing” or tight packaging. The polyester cover was fine — it was the inner plastic material itself that gave off that horrible smell that would not go away. It was really shocking because of how many positive reviews this mattress has online. I guess because it’s so easy to clean, people ignore the nasty fumes. But it’s so easy to clean because it is literally just a hunk of plastic. Yes, you can breathe right through it but what’s the point if the air the baby is breathing in is disgusting and headache-inducing?
