I gave this lens 5/5 because i think it’s really quite a stellar engineering achievement. That doesn’t mean there aren’t negatives to the lens. It just means that i understand that trade-offs had to be there to ensure that the lens is realizable.
For example, you can’t deride this lens’s light plastics and telescoping zoom if you enjoy its compactness, lightness and cost. Nor can you say that it’s missing image stabilization, as that too reduces the lens weight, size and cost.
The only point of ****CAUTION**** i have about this lens, as well as all Tamron lenses purchased on Amazon. Even if you purchase it from Amazon Prime (ie NOT a 3rd party seller), you will NOT receive the Canadian warranty. WARNING! I emailed Tamron to confirm and they did indeed state that Amazon is not an authorized reseller of Tamron products.

This is a nice low cost alternative to the GM, which costs $3299+tax. The build is okay but I’m not sure how well it will endure rough handling. The image quality is very good. Close to if not on par with the GM. Do note that the one sold by amz does not have warranty.

This lens is a good alternative to the $3200 CAD 2.8/70-200 GMaster. It focuses quickly and gives me 15fps on the A9 with continuous focus. The build quality seems decent but it isn’t tough like a GMaster or Canon L equivalent. The upside to this is the lens is also very light for what it is capable of doing. So far I am happy with it.

I love this series of Lenses from Tamron. This is an amazing lens for a great price. Great depth of field. Good in low light. Specially the size is perfect to fit in a regular camera bag. I have the Tamron 28-75 as well. This is definitely a great addition to my kit.

Llevo años en la fotografía, este 70-180 cumple muy bien calidad de imagen, muy bien en autofoco, muy bien en precio, pero la calidad de construcción es si podría mejorar, se extra el botón programable, seguramente en una 2a generación de este lente. Lo recomiendo? Si, por el momento es el mejor zoom 70-180 en calidad precio para montura e de Sony.

For me it is the perfect portrait lens for Sony (= or less than 1,600 cad) And very decent for wildlife. Would be perfect with a teleconverter. Please Tamron build one !

My keep rate is great but unfortunately at hockey events the focus shifts to the white net surrounding the rink. Great lens would be from 24 -200mm but the cost…..

Fantastic lens, this is my second of the three Tamron full frames for Sony. I have loved using both and find myself using them more often than my primes.
The seller shipped it quickly and I received it on time (even though Amazon seems to think it haven’t gotten to me yet)
Will purchase for the same seller again as they tend to offer very competitive pricing.

Really love this lens so far. Very sharp. Light and relatively inexpensive for what it is. Definitely gives the Sony equivalent a run for its money. Lens focus is quick and fast, and zooms out smoothly and nicely. Good weight trade-off for optics. So far loving the Tamron series of zoom lenses for the Sony E-series line. This one is my favourite so far and I have most of them.

What a beast! Images are so crispy and clear. 180mm will fulfill almost all your zoom-in needs for an event videography unless you need a lense for wildlife or bird photography. 180mm is enough and the performance of this lense……just go for it!!
