Bought one of these, accuracy seems to be ok, build quality questionable as flimsy plastic feel. Relatively simple to understand and use, but it could have been designed from a software point of view a little better and a little clearer. Display a little small and hard to read, need to keep putting reading glasses on.
I dropped my first one, onto softish tarmac (the type you get in children’s play areas) and although there was not a mark on it, the readings were reversed after the drop i.e. the brighter the light, the larger the f-stop the meter suggested i.e. if meter said f4 during overcast, when the sun comes out the meter then says f2, should be other way around, so knackered basically, had to buy another.

I am a cinematographer with years of experience. I bought a Sekonic light meter 40 years ago , which still works great. The only reason I upgraded it because the new one has a flash meter. I have been very impressed with this, this is a ( Sekonic) so I expected it to work just as well. I am very satisfied. It is a very professional and precise light meter. I have put pictures of both my old light meter and this new one side by side for comparison.

I bought this mainly to take flash readings while taking pictures with my manual film camera. It seems accurate enough. The only very annoying problem is that when you take an light reading for a flash, you have to point the lightmeter away from you, and towards the subject, which means you can’t see the screen, and then when you turn the meter around to see the screen the reading has changed. This makes it pretty unusable. Am I missing something? I’m about to return the item if no one can help.

The Sekonic Flashmate L308X is a do-everything meter; it will measure ambient light in aperture or shutter speed priority, and flash illumination using a cord or in cordless mode. It also has provision for measuring Lux levels, and will meter exposure information for both cine and HD cinematographers. And it will do all of this in either incident (using the included lumisphere) or reflected light (with the lumisphere slid to the right). Using the optional lumidisc, it will also meter flat subjects such as green screens and copy work. This meter really does do pretty much everything. Accuracy is within 1/10 of a stop, and you can customize the display to show you full stops, half stops, or third stops.
Included in the package is the meter, a neck lanyard, and a leather envelope case. It doesn’t fit the meter particularly well, and I doubt many users will find it useful. It does have a belt clip. The meter is powered by 1 – AA battery (not included) and will run for 20 hours on an Alkaline cell, or 10 hours on manganese. A built in power meter will alert you when the battery is getting low; accuracy of the meter is not affected. The meter is backlit; to conserve battery power, it only activates the backlight when the ambient illumination is below a low level. If you wish to activate the back light yourself, you can do so by shielding the lumisphere with your hand, and pushing the ASA button.
I would STRONGLY recommend that anyone purchasing the unit should download the full manual from Sekonic. It’s free, comprehensive, and runs to 53 pages. The handout packaged with the meter attempts to distill 53 pages into 4 paragraphs, and fails miserably.
In closing, this is an excellent meter that should last you for many years; and no matter what you find yourself doing, if you’re doing serious photography or cinematography this meter will prove its worth. It covers all the bases, and does so with elegance and precision. Highly recommended.

I had been using a cheap Jessops light meter before purchasing this Sekonic, but
it was ambiant/reflective and it could obviously not be used for strobes/studio.
However…it was still consistently more accurate than my cameras metering system.
So..I upgraded to the Sekonic and very glad I did. You and your photographs will benefit hugely when using an independent meter such as this. It is small and very easy to use.
Very accurate and as stated from a previous review it works out variable apertures and shutter speeds at 1/2 &1/3 stops.
Cordless or corded when using flash.
The backlight is a huge bonus when doing studio work too.
Buy one and rarely use your cameras metering system again. Ok, maybe spot
metering then.

It made a huge difference on helping me understand the light for my shots.

small compact size. very accurate , I don’t go on location photoshoot with it! reasonably priced.

For what it is and what this meter costs it should really be made with better materials. Certainly more rubber. Anyone who works on location or in a studio environment knows how easy it is for things to slip out of your hands. This meter is small. It won’t take up space in your bag which is good, but it is made of cheap slippery plastic. You can actually tell at first glance from the horrible little plastic case it’s supplied with that the manufacturer doesn’t care for preserving this meter. If your in the UK it is currently impossible to get a silicone protective cover which it really should have been supplied with. It’s functionality is good although it isn’t absolutely clear in the description on how to move between stills and movie mode.

I’m not a pro but this meter seems to be accurate and incredibly easy to use. (This is the first meter i have used). Has a nice solid feel, well built.

I finally buy myself a Sekonic FlashMate and I don’t regret my move.
Having studio flash, it’s a must to have a good view of the light and not do only try and error.

This is a replacement … so easy to use, light weight, fits into pocket … I use it for ambient and flash readings …. set ASA press button & readings done!! It can offer different Aperture & Speed settings from reading the light level … Can be plugged into studio flash cable or work without being plugged in … Last one lasted 20 years RECOMMENDED
