I am really liking this camera, not being a professional I find it an easy to use camera, with good instructions on how to use it, its not complicated at all and so far I really like it. I will update in a few months time once I have used it more and see if anything pops up that changes my mind.

It is a great camera for someone starting out in photography. Great quality.

upgrade from d3200and picture quality is better.
casing feels cheaper than previous but is lighter.

I chose the D3500 for its attractive price and it fits my needs. However first DSLR buyers must be aware that 18-55 focal range is suited for portraits and won’t zoom anything at all as 50mm is the normal view angle of the human eye. 18mm will go wide angle instead. If you’d like to shoot distant subjects, you should consider adding a 55-200 or 70-300 which will considerabely raise the total investment but you can’t go wrong with this choice if taking top notch beginner pictures is your goal.

Whoah boy. This is a very ooh-la-la device. It has about three groups of settings: (a) full automatic; (b) guide mode; and, (c) special effects. And with (b) and (c), one can have as much creative control as one desires. I would advise a model-specific guidebook from a 3rd party to get the most out of one’s new D3500. This model came with a camera, a lens, a Nikon-yellow-labelled strap, and a pamphlet, a battery and a charger. And that’s it. No accessory cables. No extra battery. Pity. I’d also recommend trying out its Bluetooth feature (to control it via a PED [personal electronic device]). Still, it’s a SIGNIFICANT upgrade from my phone’s camera. No buyers’ remorse.

Let’s get one thing out first and foremost: the D3500 is probably one of the best budget cameras on the market right now, and a great buy for beginner photographers. If you’re thinking of getting it: go for it.
Some general things to be aware of:
There’s a few kits available: The D3500 body + 18-55MM VR (vibration reduction) len is a great basic buy. The D3500 body + 18-55MM VR + *non VR* lens kits are less great. If it basically costs nothing over the initial kit, sure go for it, but you’re going to have a hard time using a non-VR lens as a beginner. You’re better off buying the base kit and then spending the extra cost getting an additional lens that works for you. Some places give a bag with it (like Costco); this is fine. Avoid all other kits. In *general*, kits are an opportunity for retailers to bundle a bunch of stuff that doesn’t sell well / isn’t well regarded with things that are desirable in order to move inventory. Photography is a hobby that has damned near infinite scaling for how much money you can throw at it: save the money and instead spend it on things you personally want, and things you know are quality.
There is some downsides to the camera, but again, photography is something you can spend damned near infinite money in. The downsides are things that are understandable for its price class, and again, for its price class you’re going to have a hard time competing with the D3500. Your other option is probably the Canon Rebel T6, but I personally prefer the Nikon lines. If you want to spend roughly similar amounts of money but get a “better” camera, you can look into the used markets: but that has astericks attached to it wherein there’s a slightly higher risk profile than buying a new one. But the used market is outside of the scope of this review.

This was my first DSLR camera and I’m not disappointed. Very straight forward and it’s making learning very easy. I was on the fence while trying to choose between Canon or Nikon. I can’t say it’s better than a Canon (because I haven’t had one to compare) but I am very happy with my decision. Love this camera!
