I mainly use this in and around Montréal. It is unbelievable the quantity of false info this gives you: wrong one ways, streets that hasn’t existed for years, neighborhoods that have been there for years that don’t show on the maps.
I paid more to get the traffic. It used to give me wrong traffic info. Now, the traffic doesn’t work anymore. But if I go to Quebec or Ottawa or Toronto, it suddenly works.
If you ask this GPS for more than one route, the second one will always be stupid.
The GPS on my cellphone is way better.

Where do I start? Lots of research ending with total disappointment. Several years ago we purchased a Garmin Nuvi. It served us well over the years and we affectionately referred to it as “the lady”. When we pulled off the path, such as a gas station or restaurant, she would nag redirecting. Those were the good days until her screen went black.

Fast forward to yesterday. Mind you this is a Garmin DriveSmart 65 & Traffic-by name only. This did not come with the traffic update cord. Having updated the software and charged the battery, it was ready for it’s first test. The first thing was to set it for home. The “lady” recognized our home address, the DriveSmart would accept the number 9547, but W9547 (see below), so I went with the option to go with “current location”. It knows our exact location, right (read on)?

I then tried to locate the destination with an address number E809. You guest it-no dice. So, 809 CR, Elmwood was a take. No option to choose a E/W direction. It was downhill from there. When we knowingly made a correct turn, it was asking us to turn back. Maybe it had planned another route we didn’t know about. The Nuvi would have reset the path.
Well, after about 6 miles, it started to get some directions right-until I knew to take a right turn and it told me to go straight. When we got to the final road, it directed us to turn right. That led to in an eight mile circle. Going back to the basics, we stopped in a gas station to ask directions. Sure enough, we should have turned left rather than right. Following directions from the farmers at the gas station, we finally got there. Oh, for a new GPS!

Then the return home. Having preset “Home”, it was easy to set. Great! It got us out of the drive in the right direction until the first turn. DriveSmart indicates turn right (North), but the direction we came from initially was left (South). Turning left our digital dash compass indicates due south. Once again, after repeated prompts to reverse course, the Drive Smart concedes and starts to give proper direction-until the next major intersection. DriveSmart indicates turn right-no, we know we have to turn left. By this time, I challenged the DriveSmart with our in-dash GPS (which wasn’t totally trustworthy) to see how they compared. Again, DriveSmart wants us to go back but once again concedes. So we are approaching our home address. The in-dash tells us we have arrived at our destination on the right. The DriveSmart, continues to the next street and turn left into a subdivision. Enough said, this is not the Garmin we knew.

The good features is that the screen is sharp and bright, the touch screen is responsive, a lot of the features are excellent. But if A GPS cannot logically accept information and give logical directs, it is a detriment to driving.

I bought this for my father as a birthday gift because hes on the road all the time doing service calls. Literally 50% of the time when the car is turned on, it stays on the ‘acquiring satellites’ screen forever and doesn’t connect until he unplugs and replugs it back in. He had an older model before this one (6 years older) and it gave him way less issues.
For the price I had decently high expectations and now I honestly feel it was a waste of money.

I bought this expensive gps because I did not have a computer only a chrome book and wanted the map updates. They wanted another 50.00 on top of what I paid which is not stated anywhere. Update I took this to Staples and unfortunately I was on some third world site trying to rip me off. Does not need computer whatsoever. I;m computer illiterate, hence the reason for buying wifi. I wanted the garmin because I am familiar with their programme. Buyers beware. Update. I am so disappointed in this garmin. There is either something wrong with it or its a piece of crap. They can;t just leave things simple.

I have to buy a dashboard mount and have NO IDEA which one to buy…You cannot simply put this product on the windshield..In some cases its ILLEGAL in some states and Canadian states…I will be calling the manufacturer.

Just returned. Frustrating: wanted street address before city and state, Even when looking for something in same city you are currently in, Searching POI will randomly give options in other states if you don’t remember to hit your city first. You must only use arrows on left side to advance options -accidentally touch screen hoping to scroll, it goes to some other screen. Also at beginning of every trip: it says to proceed to the beginning of your route, but not necessarily how to get there – sometimes OK once you start moving, but especially unhelpful in unfamiliar territory. Last straw: sitting perpendicular to a hwy, and it wouldn’t tell me to turn right or left – just to proceed to a road not listed on the map, even if I zoomed in and out.

Although this product is meant to be positioned on the dash of the vehicle when in use, it overheats and stops functioning; This was in early Spring and less than 80 degrees out. But what is even more frustrating is being told by Amazon that they will not replace the unit because although it was less than 3 months since it was purchased, it was over the one month exchange/return policy.

I liked the first one so much, I bought a second one for my partner. These are just the greatest to have, the very idea of not having to continually reach for the screen and poke fingers on it, (causing distraction from what’s around you while moving on the roadways), there is nothing better than just talking to it and listening to your choices and picking one of them vocally……nothing better than this little demon….it’s gonna keep me company a very long time. Map updates are simple, just plug it into your computer and it’s complimentary program pops up and it updates….simple, no mess, no fuss and not too difficult for those people who are not too computer savvy, that they can’t follow the directions fairly easily!! 5 Thumbs up Garmin, wonderful device!

I was very excited when Garmin announced this product, including such features as 3D maps, speed warnings, and rerouting due to traffic, among many new bells and whistles. Unfortunately, the 3D maps are not yet available for my city (Calgary), and the other features are hit and miss.

I had previously purchased the Go 600 from TomTom because it provided speed warnings. Specifically, I want to be sure I don’t accidentally speed in playground zones, which are unavoidable in my neighborhood. Unfortunately, neither product works as advertised. The speed limits for the playground zones are not included for my neighborhood. I tried informing TomTom about the missing playgrounds two years ago, but they still haven’t been added to the map. I recently tried to inform Garmin about the same thing, giving them very detailed information, but was told their map vendor doesn’t accept residential street updates.

As for the maps, both devices have some errors, but I know enough about my city to generally ignore it when it happens. Sometimes I’m forced to turn around once or twice to figure out which road to take. The DriveSmart 55 doesn’t give enough information to get me through some of Calgary’s more complex exits. In particular, there is one exit on the right, which then immediately splits into two further exits that take you in opposite directions. The Go 600 guides you through it flawlessly (it repeats keep left about half a dozen times). The DriveSmart doesn’t tell me to exit on the right until it’s too late, and only tells me once to keep left after I’ve exited. If your radio is a little loud, you can easily miss it. You can increase the volume of the DriveSmart in one of the menus.

A new feature about the DriveSmart that I like is that it warns about cameras at intersections, at least those that are known. Another nice feature of the DriveSmart is that it is a little more explicit when it comes to traffic lights. Specifically, rather than tell me to “turn right” like the Go 600 does, the DriveSmart tells me “turn right at the traffic light”. That can be very handy when there’s more than one possible turn.

The DriveSmart also warns you if there is a speed limit change coming up ahead, so you get a heads up before the actual change. Sometimes the speed limit signs are easy to miss due to untrimmed trees or tall vehicles, so the heads up is handy. I should add that all warnings on both devices only warn you by beeping. Again, that’s easy to miss if the radio is on, and requires that you look away from the road and onto the device to know why it beeped. I had hoped that the DriveSmart, being a much newer device, would have at least had the option to have the device speak the warnings. I have yet to find a setting for that.

Finally, a minor nuisance with the DriveSmart is that the suction cup on the window keeps falling off. That’s because I always pull the GPS off the window and put it away in my car’s storage compartment to avoid a break-in. By the time I get back to the car, the suction cup has usually fallen off. With the Go 600, the GPS simply lifts out of the cradle, and I can put it away. The Go 600 cradle has only fallen off a couple of times in the years that I’ve owned it, which you have to expect since the suction cups eventually lose suction and need to be reattached. The DriveSmart suction cup falls off every two or three times I pull the device off the suction cup.

One other point of comparison is the size of the devices. I bought the GO 600 because I wanted a large screen (6″), but was barely able to squeeze it into the corner of my 2017 Honda Accord without it blocking too much of my view. The DriveSmart 55 unit is a 5.5″ display, but it’s almost edge to edge, so the device fits easily into the corner and is very easy to read while you’re driving.

All in all, I’m disappointed with the DriveSmart considering that it’s three years newer than the Go 600. I continue to use the DriveSmart for now to see how well it works in other parts of my city, but I will probably sell it and resume using my GO 600. It’s unfortunate.

EDIT: I bypassed Garmin and entered the edits directly on the vendor’s maps (at here.com). It remains to be seen if they’re accepted and if they propagate to Garmin. The vendor’s discussion boards are a ghost town, so I’m still waiting to find out how long it might take to get to Garmin.

I’m giving the DriveSmart three stars for now. If the vendor does indeed not accept updates to residential streets, then I would give this two stars since the playground zone data is years out of date.

I bought the Garmin 65 traffic because I’m a Garmin fan and loved my Garmin Zumo 660 until it became obsolete in April thanks to a design flaw in the firm ware that Garmin wasn’t prepared to fix. I bought another top end Garmin GPS but it doesn’t work as advertised. The traffic feature that I thought would work trough my phone like Google maps, doesn’t. I’m still playing with it but it appears to only work in some ( a few) cities in the world. Documentation on this feature is vague, it will probably mean a call to Garmin. Base camp the software that allows route planning can’t find the GPS so I can’t manage or plan routes. Garmin can’t solve this but I do have an open ticket on it. Maybe they will get back to but they haven’t yet and it’s been 15 days. Very disappointing Garmin
