I’ve used the Datacolor Passport and loved it. I purchased this due to misplacing the Passport. This makes colour matching and grading easy between cameras, or different shots you want to look similar. It gives a fantastic base to start your edits from.

At first I wondered why this tool would be useful. On getting it, it’s been like a revelation. When combined with the accompanying software it makes sorting out the colours on my images a breese. I’ve used it for a couple of portrait sessions and the results is fantastic. Skin tones look really natural and everything is super consistent. I love how the preset uses the sliders that I normally avoid in my workflow. This makes things even better as it means it’s helping out massively. I think the results speak for itself. The attached portrait is a shot that I took using two speedlights.

I’ve started an online business recently and getting the right colours are paramount – even if the person viewing them may not have the most accurate colour profile, at least I know I’ve done the right thing in showing my products accurately.

So this is an A5 size ‘plasticcy’ feeling grid with colour blocks on one side and grayscale blocks on the other.

I have to give credit to Datacolor as they have two guides on their website – a quick start guide – and a more thorough guide which really spells out what the grid does and more importantly how to use it in Lightroom and CaptureOne. It’s not too technical either.

Here is a quick rundown of how it works after you’ve installed the Spydercheckr software.

    1. Setup your scene with lighting and everything and take a photo of the grid where your subject it.

    2. Take all your subjects photos with the same lighting setup.

    3. Repeat step 1 if you’ve going to take photos with different lighting or locations.

    3. Import your photos into Lightroom (I don’t use CaptureOne)

    4. Apply white balance using the grey colour grid as the reference.

    For the colour correction magic:

    1. Within lightroom, crop the photo of the colour grid tightly – but don’t do anything else like Exposure, Contrast, so on!

    2. Right click the colour grid photo and you’ll see a new option: Edit In > SpyderCheckr

    3. The SpydrChecker software will open and automatically match up your grid with its internal references.

    4. You’ll get save the profile into Lightroom as a Preset (in development mode).

    5. You have to restart Lightroom for the Preset to show up.

    6. Apply that Preset to whichever photos you like.

    7. Done!

The difference might be so subtle your eyes might not even notice.

If you want to prove it to yourself, just take a look at the HSL panel within Lightroom’s Development window.

Conclusion: I definitely think this is worth buying. Especially for clothing and accessories. The grid is made out of plastic so will last a long time, the price is competitive compared to its bigger competitor and I’m happy with the colours that are referenced.

    Recommended Product!

Highly recommended for photography. I am using this one to calibrate all my cameras with different lenses.
My only concern is why they are using (on the back face) 50% gray to define your EV and not 18% gray.
I recommend this one for all the photograph guys to use it to calibrate the camera (or cameras) and different lenses to create Lightroom and ACR profiles.
    Regards,
    Marcel

The grey in the back of the card is the wrong color and card comes in a sleeve instead of passport (and its big) so it’s not that portable and its always scary to use it because there is barely any place to hold it so you’re always explaining to people to be careful.

Really nice colour checker. I would appreciate more support for software. At the moment it’s only supported in Lightroom and Davinci Resolve. What about Capture One and Premiere Pro? Come on!

Also, it’s only useful if you really understand colour science. For an average amateur it will be a steep learning curve. It’s not as straight forward or useful as one might think. Only useful for professional work or if you have interest in colour science.

    Edit (20.09.2017):

I just received a pleasant comment underneath from their support team – that is a good testimony for the company.

I also wanted to add that it’s a great product if you are thinking about stepping into proper colour correction – it’s probably the cheapest option on the market, so the risk is low if it does not work for you.

This does the job of setting accurate colours when I remember to use it! Its not terribly robust but it is slim enough and light enough to keep in my camera bag. I just need to use it more! If accurate colour is important then you need this (along with your colorimeter to calibrate the monitor!).
I should add that if you use the Adobe suite of products then Datacolor provide software that integrates with Adobe to produce LUT files that automatically correct the colours to match the chart. Unfortunately I don’t use Adobe so have to do it manually, but that is still much better than just guessing and relying on memory!

This really seems like one of those things where the price is heavily skewed upward due it’s utility rather than the material cost. It’s really hard to justify the cost when, at the end of the day, all you’re getting is a sheet of colors. Granted, they are color accurate and that’s what you’re paying for. I can’t ignore that, at the end of the day, the product does it’s job and does it well. Be sure to avoid getting dirty hands on it and keep the box for storage so it doesn’t get bent.

I was excited to dial in the saturation and various hues but the results were funny off my Sony A7iii in DaVinci.
Maybe it’s more geared to photography.
I’ve been doing video production for a while so there was no user error. Tried both the auto and manual methods of matching hues and balancing saturation.
I’ll try an X-rite to see if it works better.

This costs a lot less than most passports but it does the trick. I usually throw it in one of the shots and then use it to sample from in Lightroom to correct color. Works very well in post. I tried to take a photo of the coloured side to use as a custom white balance on my 5Dmkiii and found that it pulled too much magenta. IMO the trick is to color adjust in Lightroom and you’ll get great results.

I bought this for color balance of paintings (art conservator here, hi!). It works perfectly well, plus, it’s very cheap as compared to other color targets. The only thing I would criticize is the size of the target. It’s suuuuuper big, like twice the size I would’ve needed. That being said, I can work with it and my pictures look amazing.

I use this little reference a lot more than I expected. Camera settings for white balance work fine so long as there is only one type of light source. They struggle when mixed light sources are on the subject, which is where this little unit comes into it’s own.
I shall be buying another one later because I am starting to rely on it more and more.
