Amazon really needs to do a better job checking their Open Boxed items. Defective out of the box. Would not turn on after taking a single photo.

Disappointing Electronic ViewFinder. Could not show birds and other small wildlife amongst cluttered backgrounds.

Simple to use right out of the box, especially if you set the mode to Auto. Has more than enough features for most people to grow into. Best feature is that it can accept almost any lens with an adapter.

Great camera! However, if you are on the fence definitely get the R.

I own both the original 6D as well as the RP. Ive only had the RP for a short time, but here are some of my impressions. All in all, it seems to be a very good camera. Other than the resolution, I still prefer the images from my 6D but as I said, its early yet.
I think the body is a little cheapy feeling. The ergonomics are good and you really dont need the extra bottom plate unless you have gigantic hands. It has a good grip and as everyone has mentioned, its very light. Of course until you add some big EF lenses. Other than the nice grip it tends to remind me of a Sony in that everything is minimal, controls are flush to the body, all black. I would have prefered a little better leatherette cover, and some more slr like controls. However, im being picky here and this would all affect the size and weight of the camera.
The EVF is a top notch feature. For landscapes in particular, there really has been no other way but Live View through the LCD, but that has changed. You can almost forget about the rear LCD except for certain purposes, the EVF is that good. It allows you to control everything and see everything including exposure. You can see in the EVF whether the sky is blown out etc. And thanks to drag and focus, you can easily move the focus point , get the exposure you like and lock it in with exposure lock. It is very much like having a peephole LCD. Big points for this.
The autofocus is excellent and you can have a combination of them in place at the same time. The eye detect focus from my limited use is very fast and does a great job. If you want to to change the focus, just touch your LCD while looking through the EVF and you can move it, almost anywhere in the frame.
There are a number of other great features such as focus bracketing that ive yet to try, but that one has the potential to be great. So all that being said, lets get to the image quality.
Anyone moving from an aps-c to full frame Im sure will be very impressed with the RP. With a good lens you cant beat that combination of razor sharp and creamy soft that full frame offers. The colors of course are very good as expected, and here is a surprize. I was expecting the DR to be a real downer but its not. I convert to dng and edit in other programs other than DPP and i was surprised at how much range there is. Its certainly not class leading, but it is very respectable. If you need more than this, you really took a bad exposure. The low light performance is very good, and you can get very respectable images even beyond 12800 ISO with a little work. Now i have to say this, for whatever reason, i still prefer the images of the original 6D. I cant say exactly why, a combination of the tone, color and what i like to call the creaminess is still better for me on the 6D. But again I am splitting hairs. For the most part, the RP is capable of producing images rivaling the best of Canons full frame cameras. And it has a lot of practical convenience features that make this one hell of a camera for the price.

This camera just continues to surprise me every time I use it. From amazing low light shooting to super quick auto focus, this camera was an awesome upgrade from my canon rebel t5 I’d been using for the past few years. I shoot mainly portraits but have also shot landscape and macro since getting it and all photos have turned out great. I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone looking to upgrade but not wanting to spend too much on their new gear. Definitely look up all the specs and compare to other cameras before making the commitment, to be sure it’s exactly what you’re looking for.

I loved the small size of this full frame camera. The internet has been giving this camera hate but once you use it, it changes how you feel. Its so easy to carry this around on trips and the electronic viewfinder is so much better to use in my opinion. It has amazing video features to. It does not have a cover over the sensor though which concerns me.

In response to another review on this site, it is important to note that the camera shoots RAW just like all other similar cameras, and the RAW files can be processed on computer software just like all other similar cameras. It is sad to see that over 70 people have found the other review helpful – when it is totally inaccurate. When a new camera is released, it often takes a few weeks (or even longer) for all the software companies to update their software to accept the new camera’s files. I am guessing this is what the problem was with the other reviewer. The Canon DPP software is not at all confusing if you decide to download it. Just pick “convert and save” and the RAW files are converted to your choice of JPG or TIF.

While the camera is more of a general use camera, if you understand how to set shutter speed, then you can get shots of moving subjects such as your dog or kids.

For the price, this camera is a real bargain. You get the beautiful Canon color and easy to use ergonomics. It is weaker in low light than many of it’s competitors – that would be my only negative comment.

Again, to repeat: YOU CAN SHOOT AND PROCESS RAW FILES WITH THIS CAMERA JUST LIKE ALL OTHER SIMILAR CAMERAS.

I received the camera in one day directly from Amazon. I went through the menu settings and I connected the wifi to my phone. The camera suddenly got frozen and the only way to make it work again was removing the battery and put it back in. Also the screen would show weird colors when it got frozen. Same thing with the bluetooth, there was a point I couldn’t turn it on again. I’m not really sure if the issue was related with the wireless communications or it would happen in other situations. Also when I turned ON the camera the first time it didn’t ask to me to set the date and time, what it makes me think this camera was being used already and they didn’t even bother to test it before shipping as new. Really dissapointing. I returned the package 4 days ago and still waiting for the package to arrive so I can get the refund. Very inconvenient, I learned the lesson.

I shoot primarily on an R5 but I do a lot of street photography and photography in “rougher” environments – so wanted something that didn’t make me super paranoid to carry around and would still work on my collection of historic EF lenses. Then something entirely unexpected happened…

I fell in love with this camera!

From the second I picked it up something just felt right about this camera. The weight and form factor is less than the R5, but not in a “cheap” plastic way that you get from the m50 for example. Build quality is superb, buttons have a satisfying weighted press similar to the higher end R line and the rear screen is a tad smaller but still has full articulation and the responsiveness of the touch screen is extremely good. The articulation of the screen and lighter weight means you can easily vlog on this camera as well as using it for stills – however I don’t find the video options much more impressive than an m50, and far lacking from the R5, so this is definitely a stills oriented camera.

I got this with the latest firmware at the time which was 1.6.0, which seems to feature the same autotracking system as the upper R series but without animal eye (which is a bit of a bummer but whatever). The area AF systems and ability to lock on with the touch screen is so so so slick I can forgive the animal eye because holy sh*t does this thing focus well. It does get a little lost sometimes in darker environments but it’s admirable how well it does for the price of the thing. Low light shooting in general though has worked quite well for me despite the occasional AF issues, so if you don’t mind hitting it into manual every now and then no big deal.

The big caveat with any RF mount camera right now applies here: native RF lenses require you to mortgage your house to buy – though they are amazing. That said the EF adapter costs about $120 from canon with AF and a weather sealed mount and EF lenses honestly work better on the R series with the autofocus than they do on native EF cameras.

So if you have old EF lenses, get this and an adapter and all your old lenses become 2.0 versions of what they were (assuming they have AF) and if you are just getting into stills – get this and an adapter and get some older used EF lenses on the cheap to build out your collection.

Give it a couple years and you’ll have brands like sigma with more affordable RF lenses out there and native RF lenses will drop in price as RnD fees are absorbed, this camera will be sold out then and you’ll be regretting not having one.
