I’ve been using it for the past half an hour and I have to say it is worth every penny.
I was pleasantly surprised that the on-board speaker is pretty loud, not that I’d use it often.
Of course you’re better off with good quality earphones but let’s be honest, you’re not purchasing a cassette player for the perfect audio. (the earphones that comes with it are just the worst, use your own.)
Does not sound like chipmunks and every button works perfectly.
It can be a bit tricky to tune the radio but if you take your time, you will not jump over the frequency.
I tested the radio and cassette playback features only.

[EDIT] Okay, couple days later, the motor has become too weak to sustain a regular speed.
I can no longer listen to cassettes, radio still works but that’s not why I purchased a cassette player.
I DO NOT recommend this cassette player. I’m going to ask for a refund.

Absolutely trash. The cassette player sounds like the chipmunks . I will never use it. I am not returning it as I can receive one station on the FM radio and it’s my favorite. Also I don’t like the hassle of returning.
On second thought there was a sign that I choose to ignore. The package that contained the recorder was wrapped in a cellophane tape. This is a sign that the parcel had been opened and returned on another occasion. If this correct which definitely seems plausible this is despicable.

Huge cassette buff here. And for the price and fast shipping this is very fair. Of course you get what you pay for, but this mono player does well. Read here that the motor has a few issues, I have yet to experience these issues. Keep in mind there is a motor speed control on the back for fine pitch adjustment with a screwdriver. I bought two so far to use in some cassette related experiments and I am pretty happy with them so far.

***Edit: I found the speed adjustment screw, it’s the small hole on the back, near the battery compartment. I have been able to adjust the speed closer to normal with a small flat head screwdriver. I should be able to make it close to perfect with a tape of a known song that I can compare too.

The tape played way too fast, everything sounded like the chipmunks. Also, I bought the teal blue one but received the pink one. I don’t care too much about the color but for some it might matter.

It feels cheap, but is functional. They do need to fix the calibration mistake on those. If the cassette playback speed was correct I would have given 4 stars. A working cassette player for about 20$ is a steal if it’s working. With the wrong playback speed, it’s basically unsusable.

**Be aware that you might need to calibrate the playback speed yourself.**

played once for a few seconds then started eating tapes then just wouldn’t even play, no movement of the spindle n this version doesn’t have a viewing window to see the tape moving.. so is deceiving before yards of your tape is eaten up.. so returned it.. love the Robin’s blue color though.. purchased another one from another buyer, more money but you get what you pay for and that one works great.

I bought two of these (one teal, one pink) for two close friends of mine as Christmas presents. I am a bit of a “tapehead” who even in 2020 still buys (and releases my own) music on cassette, so I’m fully aware of the atrocious sound and build quality of modern systems and generally buy retro gear then fix it up for my own listening.

Overall, while this review may come across as critical, bearing in mind the terrible state of the cassette player market in the 21st century, this model deserves praise for being one of the most functional available.

The build quality of these is fairly rudimentary – Tanashin mechanism, no autostop and no EQ options – but it does what it says on the tin admirably, in that it plays cassettes at a consistent speed and volume, without chewing them. It also has both rewind and fast forward buttons, which for reasons unknown is increasingly rare on cheaper players (most only seem to have rewind nowadays). That this is something to celebrate says more about the low bar nowadays, but I’m still confident in saying that these are amongst the better portable units on the market today.

Throw out the incredibly nasty earbuds you get with it, and invest in basic over-ear headphones with some bass and the sound is decent, bordering on good. Like with most analogue formats, it depends on the tape you use, but I was happy to hear very little background noise or hiss even on type 1 tapes. The built-in speaker, on the other hand, is dreadful and only really useful for spoken-word playback.

On that note, this player also features recording – for which, again, the quality is poor, but still a nice feature to have included. Likewise, the system has a surprisingly good and wide-receiving FM/AM radio built-in, which I was able to find channels on with ease. If you want a portable radio first and a cassette player second, this is a great choice.

One small note for those less versed in cassette player maintenance – the playback speed, while consistent, ran too fast on my pink model. However, there is an easily accessible potentiometer (basically, a screw attached to the motor that speeds up or slows down your playback speed) found in a hole on the back of the unit. It can be tweaked using a small jewellery-size screwdriver. Having the built-in speaker was actually incredibly handy for this, as I was able to “tune” it by ear mid-song using an old Roxette tape I had lying around. Sounds like a negative, but this is a surprising common occurrence on tape decks of all ages and honestly, the easy accessibility and the fact you can tweak this without taking the whole thing apart comes across as a positive. The teal unit was perfectly calibrated already, so I’m glad to say both copies are now wrapped up and ready to give as Christmas presents.

If you’re expecting a player with the sound quality and versatility of the peak era of the Walkman and its rivals, this is not it – you may as well invest your time and effort into seeking a retro model out and fixing it up. But as an out-the-box player, for less than $25 CAD? This is comfortably one of the best available in today’s market, with a few extra features that sweeten that price further.

Now if someone could actually pull their finger out and manufacture anything close to the models of the past, that would be wonderful – but for now, this will have to do.

The first one was defective, so I returned it for a replacement. I thought I’d give it a chance. I received the replacement the other day, which unfortunately was also defective: the “stop” button was stuck to the “play” button. In short, I have given up therefore I returned the item for reimbursement. I will not risk another replacement as I suspect it will defective again. Sorry about that. I tried but just didn’t work for me.

It’s a little tinny without the head phones (but that could be because some of my cassettes are older) and the radio stations don’t come in real clear but I absolutely love it anyway. It’s lightweight, fits on my waistband AND it came much sooner than I anticipated. My biggest problem? I have to remember, while I can hear my cassettes fine, my neighbors can’t and think I’m having muscle spasms while working in the yard. 🙂 Thank you, this was so what I was looking for!

It is a good product but little costlier. Sound quality is ok. The headphones given are not good enough.
