A reflex arc is a pathway that a nerve impulse follows during a reflex action. Reflex arcs are highly beneficial in situations that require a quick response and do not involve conscious thought. A typical example of a reflex action is the patellar reflex (‘knee jerk’ response), which occurs when the patellar tendon is tapped. In its simplest form, a reflex is viewed as a function of an idealized mechanism called the reflex arc. The primary components of the reflex arc are the sensory-nerve cells (or receptor s) that receive stimulation, in turn connecting to other nerve cells that activate muscle cells (or effectors), which perform the reflex action. Reflex action is a sudden and involuntary response to stimuli. It helps organisms to quickly adapt to an adverse circumstance that could have the potential to cause bodily harm or even death. A reflex action is an involuntary and almost instantaneous motor response of the body to sensory stimulus/stimuli, for example, when a pin is pricked in the hand, the pain impulses reach the spinal cord by sensory neurons.
