I was incredibly disappointed in this purchase. Bought these for our humidifier to help with mineral build up for hard water. Followed instructions completely on pre soak and prep….and they leak a nasty black residue and gunk into our humidifier causing it to clog and disrupt the motor.

Did what it claims, keeps the white powder from blowing out into the room. But the inside of the humidifier is loaded with white scale that has to be removed on a weekly basis. When I switched to water purified by a Britta Filter, none of this happened. Not worth the price of the cartridges, to use tape water.

I saw absolutely no difference in mineral deposit white mist while using this cartridge. It is expensive and does nothing.

Horrible. Left all this black residue in the tanks and all over the inside of the humidifier. Took almost 2hrs to get all of it gone. If I only used them sooner i would have returned them in a heart beat. I have switched to using distilled water because I can’t trust this things and I’m not spending all this time cleaning.

If you think it can help you solve the troubles caused by white dust I must say you are wrong, it simply does not work. The only solution is not to use ultrasound humidifier, use evaporative or warm mist only humidifier instead. I tried to use filtered water and this thing together which are not able to solve the white dust problem, unless you plan to use distilled water, don’t use ultrasound humidifier!

Using a Taotronics humidifier with 300mL/h output and a 4L tank, I placed one cartridge in a 1L beaker of water for 30 minutes. Then I poured the water and cartridge into the empty tank, and turned on the humidifier.
In less than one minute, my Dyson air purifier went wild. Within 10 minutes, it registered more than 300 ug/m^3 particles in the air, both PM2.5 and PM10. In a room of 33 m^3.
That is what I had measured without the demineralization cartridge. So, this cartridge did nothing at all.
The water hardness in Toronto is 124 mg/L, which is just barely “hard”. (120mg/L is not considered hard, and there are some towns about 120 km away with a hardness of 600.)
I turned the humidifier off after about an hour, and then waited 6 hours. That means that the cartridge had a full 6 hours to demineralize about 700 mL of water.
When I turned the humidifier back on after 6 hours, I observed the same result.
The manufacturer says that one cartridge is god for 30-40 fillings. Clearly, this cartridge is of no use whatsoever, even when immersed in less than 1L for more than 6 hours, in water that is almost not even “hard”.
If you are concerned with Calcium Carbonate particles in the air that may cause respiratory problems, this demineralization cartridge is a waste of money. Either use distilled water (which is expensive), or don’t use Ultrasonic humidifiers, even though they are efficient and quiet. I’m not so concerned with the white dust that settles on the furniture as I am with what it does to my breathing.
Right now the outside air has 16 ug/m^3 , and inside 2 ug/m^3. With the humidifier going, with or without the demineralization cartridge, it would be over 400 ug/m^3 particles.

I got this to try and save money on distilled water, but I quickly found white dust everywhere even with 1 and 2 cartridges.
So I decided to get a TDS meter to get a clear picture of what was going on. I got two new cartridges and gave them the recommended presoak. One in tap water, one in distilled water. Then replaced the water for each container. (keeping the distilled cartridge in distilled water). After about 4 hours (Not perfectly scientific I know) the tap water went down 40ppm, and the distilled water went up 5ppm.
These are not designed for distilled water so I can understand this result, but in 4 hours a new cartridge was only able to pull out ~20% of the dissolved solids, from a single cup.
I will never trust this product again to pull enough minerals out of a gallon of water in time for the humidifier to work.

These little cartridges are doing a pretty good job, but they do not eliminate all the white dust for me. Our water is very hard I guess. What I have done is purchased an air purifier to help & between the cartridges & the air purifier it’s much better. I think if you have very hard water, these are a must if you don’t want to spend a fortune on distilled water! I would suggest an air purifier too if you can afford one.
UPDATE:
I had to lower my rating on this product as I have discovered that these will only eliminate dust when the humidifier is used on the LOWEST setting possible! When I turned it up on a dry day & left for a bit, I came back to an apt. covered in white dust!! So … I have decided to purchase a water distiller here on Amazon to make my own distilled water rather than spending a fortune & lugging gallons of water around!! I figure the distiller will soon pay for itself. Problem solved!! 🙂

Don’t expect miracles, but if your tap water is not too hard it will reduce white dust deposit in your house. It is not too expensive, so maybe using two pods at the same time can be more effective. But for us one is sufficient.

I started noticing a white film collecting on table and windows since running my Homedics humidifier, it runs almost all day. I replaced the cartridge to see if it made a difference but the film still comes back. It does help keep hard water buildup from happening inside the tank though.

I bought these for my humidifier as I have hard water, although not excessively hard. Since the humidifier is ultrasonic and not evaporative, white dust was everywhere no matter how often I cleaned. According to the description these cartridges are supposed to eliminate white dust but they did not even reduce it. The only thing that works is using distilled or de-mineralized water which gets expensive and cumbersome to buy unless you filter the tap water which also adds to the cost. I would not buy them again.

I purchased these as I was getting a lot of the white dust that often occurs with a humidifier. I remembered reading the online reviews and one person said it made the problem worse. I am here to testify that the same thing happened with me. Instead of dusting the house once every 2 or 3 days, I had to dust it 2 or 3 times a day! It did not help the problem with white dust and in fact, it made it worse than ever! Homedics should be ashamed to sell this product!

Easy to use ! I haven’t had first filter pod in humidifier long enough to really tell it’s quality especially on white dust! Seems
to be working and is helpful, my review of 3 stars only reflects lack of data on my part . So far so good…. i’ll review again in a month or two
