Sony RMTDSLR2 Wireless Remote for Alpha & NEX, (Black)

I’ve been using this remote control on a Sony a6500 for the last few weeks. It’s a bit pricey but worth it in my opinion. Using this I can snap a still photo with no delay or with a 2 second delay without having to touch the camera. I usually shoot in Manual Mode but have Memory 1 set up to record 4k video and Memory 2 will record HFR video when the record button is pressed.

I find this extremely handy to have 3 different cameras effectively set up in one body and to be able to use all of them without having to physically touch the camera. It does involve a few extra steps to recall and enter the memory position, but it’s all done from the remote control.

When using a prime lens, turning on Clear Image Zoom does allow digital telephoto functions using the + and – keys. Since this is a digital zoom it does jump in steps from normal to telephoto settings which need to be edited in the final clip.

When using the 16-50mm Power Zoom kit lens (or my favorite 18-105mm G Power Zoom), the + and – keys give me just a smooth of a zooming action as can be achieved using the rocker switch on the side of the lens.

The arrow buttons can also be used to shift the focus point without having to touch the camera screen which is a great feature. I haven’t explored all of the focus options yet as my preference is to either use Flexible Spot or Expand Flexible Shot for most of my shots.

I don’t have the appropriate cable yet to hook the camera up to my TV, but from what I’ve been able to discern from the manual and other videos, the remote can also be used to control some functions on the playback device.

I just sold my old NEX-7 but the tests that I did on that camera were a bit more limiting. Primarily shutter release functions worked, but the video recording did not for me.

All of the newer cameras from the a6000 on up should work fine with this remote control.

The instructions for setup are terrible. I will quote one Amazon user (ptk8588) for proper setup that works on the A7iii, as I have successfully attempted.

“For A7Riii users, press “Menu” >>> choose “Setup3″ >>> Remote Ctrl: ON (page 3/7). If it’s still unable to control your camera after turning that function ON, you will need to do an extra step that removing the camera battery and then put it back again.”

I use this for several uses, for vlogging, real estate photography, night photography, etc.
It’s great how I don’t need to attach an external device onto my camera like my older remote, BUT, that had WAY more range than this. This remote must be pointing directly at the camera, not from behind (potentially may get it at the side). It works up to about… 20ft or so? But it doesn’t always work. It would have been better if I could use it at like 100ft+ as I love taking photos from a great distance. This still isn’t a lot, but its probably asking too much

Using this remote with Sony a6300. Very compact and easy to conceal when necessary. Also very easy to lose! I have attached a small lanyard with via an adhesive pad. Gives full remote control over most camera functions, including, obviously, shutter release, auto focus, power zoom (on compatible lenses), and menu functions. Long (bulb) exposures are possible with two presses of the shutter button: one to open, one to close. IR sensor is on the front of this camera, so the remote must be aimed towards it; not inconvenient, but not necessarily immediately intuitive. Very satisfied with this great accessory!

This remote is great for someone who travels a lot by themselves. I especially like to use this when I take photos of the stars on a tripod as it ensures that I won’t get any camera shake. Also used it a lot for my solo trip to Iceland when I wanted to take some photos of myself. Just make sure you put a timer on your camera and you’re good to go. The remote is very user friendly and has a lot of different applications. Couldn’t be happier with this purchase.
