I think the subscription price to my doorbell is a bit excessive. Let’s compare to a subscription to Netflix. For $10 I get a subscription to video of my front and rear door – or I can get Netflix! Netflix spends about $10 billion dollars on creating content every year, while Ring spends – nothing! Point goes to Netflix for better value. But how about the value of keeping thieves away? Well, you don’t need a subscription for that – thieves don’t know if you’re subscribed or not so if the doorbell deters them, then the subscription has no additional value. Similarly, you can own a remote control with a Netflix button on it to impress your friends, but you don’t actually need to subscribe to Netflix. Tie. Well how about the value of seeing the person steal your package? Good luck with that. What are you going to do? Do you know where the thieves live? And even if you did, are you going to knock on their door and accuse them? What are you going to do when they say, “No, I didn’t.” Are you going to fight them? And if you think the police are going to help, well, see what happens when you try. I have a friend that tried and the Police refused to even look at the video. Your milage may vary.
As for the non-subscription aspects, I had some issues early on with the video not showing up on my 4 Echo show devices. It would announce that there was someone at the door, but not show any video. That lasted a few days and cleared up after I sent a report to Amazon about it. It also would creepily say that “there are several people already viewing your doorbell” when asked to manually show video of the doorbell on my echo shows. That also cleared up at the same time.
So, for now, it works fine. I get an announcement on my echo devices with video when someone rings the door bell. Not sure what will happen if Ring ever shut down their servers, but for now it works. I’m not going to take down my old doorbell chime yet though, because you never know. They offer no guarantees the the doorbell will continue to work without pinging the mothership.

It installerd quite nicely and the Mobile App worked good.They should take down the windows app if they’re not going to support it. BUT, if you’re only going to use the phone. Also, it’s a money grab. After the intro time period , they cut off the video save feature untill you pay a monthly fee! (Minimum $5.00/mo.)I consider this deceptive advertising since other webcams have a free access option. This one doesn’t. Also, if you use this for the doorbell answering, beware that it takes umore 30 seconds on our wifii system before we can see the video. At our house, I can just goto the door when I hear the notification and see who’s there before I even get video. Also, the cutoff date for returns is short. Like 30 days maybe. So by the time you find out things aren’t working the way you wanted, it’s too late to send it back!

Guys read before you buy, not like that other review who clearly didn’t read before he bought, bypass’s the chime in your house, you need to spend more money (the more expensive ring door bells) to use with your existing chime, this one appeals to people who don’t want to spend 150-300. Amazing that ring came out with one everyone can afford, you can buy the ring chime separately or the kit version if you need the chime noise in your house. But who needs that when everyone has their phone or Alexa near by.

I never installed a doorbell before and still found this to be an easy installation. Previously we had a Telus doorbell which was poor in updating in real time. This ring doorbell quality is not bad for the price. The sound transmission and quality is much worse than I expected but I am ok with that for now. If the cam is facing at an angle(if installed on vinyl siding) the cam points to the sky and this hinders the image quality on a bright sunny day. The fact that I had to disable my existing chime and use their plug in chime really took away from the seamless installation experience. One other frustrating thing is that even though I think the price of the doorbell itself is affordable, I inevitably had to buy two separate bracket kits to install the doorbell to our siding next to the door. I needed to buy a wedge kit and a corner kit at around $50 combined. I was not able to find a generic bracket that is compatible with the doorbell wired. So, when I add the costs of the brackets the bell is not really a good deal considering I had to disable my chime and had to lose the ability to use 5.1 ghz wifi. I honestly think that the wedge kit and cornet kit should either be free and included in the package or the price for those should be no more than ten dollars. In conclusion, this doorbell is a good deal ONLY if you don’t need to purchase the wedge or corner mounting bracket kits and the chime.
Update May 11, 2021: Ring support reached out to me and took my feedback. The support rep assured me that they will make it more clear in marketing that this requires you to deactivate your existing chime and you need to purchase the chime separately. My review and opinion has not changed since writing.
