Arrived on time and in good order. Recording process straight forward. Transferring the audio files from the -852 to a PC running a W10 op/sys took a bit of fooling around, file formats, compatibility, and all that cumbersome stuff. Test platform was Neil Diamond playing ‘Cherry, Cherry’; recorded first using the PC’s external logitech side speakers at a distance of a few feet; then file transferred back to the PC using the USB connector; MP3 file then played back on the PC using a resident Windows Player utility. Hardly a precision lab demonstration but the results were good, as determined by a pair of aged ears adorned with a pair of lying around sklullcandy ‘phones. Top marks for that configuration. Neil and the Band were not disgraced!

Battery power always a problem. Fixed AAAs a decent choice if the current load is light, as rechargeable ones of that type in our experience are prone to a rapid self-discharge. A hard connector to a sturdy portable Li rechargeable pack would have been our preference; saves much grief in the long term. At the moment a pair of in-a-drawer Amazon NiMH [externally topped up] rechargeables are in place for trial.

External memory not required for our limited applications and was not looked at.

After this quickie evaluation the conclusion is the product is suitable as a discrete good fidelity recording device. Beyond that, a PC also with good fidelity is required to get the most out of this gadget. Reliability over time will determine if a 5th * would be warranted. For now, all is good.

Amazing!! This thing hold batteries like crazy. I’ve recorded hours and hours the battery is still full. It’s old school too. Just push record and it records, then play and it plays. Delete and it deletes. Fast forward/back. You get my drift. Not like thoes lame looks like a USB “recorders” I got that first and downloaded the program to hear what I recorded, so not compatible for Mac. What a peice of … it’s in my garbage. This device is really simple and easy. You don’t need a computer u less you want to save recordings. Then it has a USB inside (if you want to use it again and save what you have) It even blocks out background noise and picks up the voices very crisp and clear. Hope that helps!!

I have just ran through manual and all the functions and made several test. Very happy with the quality of its sound. Built in microphones are sensitive and great sound. No culprit could seriously deny it is his voice on the recording…Recording from the microphone jack also yield great sound and sensitivity but will depend on the quality and sensitivity of your microphone. I got good result even with cheap (a few bucks worth) electret microphones. You can also use it for “dubbing” (copying from a mp3/cd/tape/phone/computer headphones jack). It has dedicated settings for diverses circumstances such as recording a person from across a room (high sensitivity) or copying from a another device headphones jacks (handling much higher voltage than a microphone).

You can transfert via USB songs and other mp3 files from the computer onto the recorder and use this recorder as a mp3 player. Although it records in 128kbps stereo maximum, it can play mp3 up to 320 kbps. I have transfered some songs in mp3 256kbps and the sound quality is quite amazing for a device not sold to serve as a music player. I have found audio quality comparable to a music mp3 player sold for the same price.

When playing, frequency response is 30Hz to 20khz, quite good. Can play up to 320kbps mp3. For recording, the frequency response is, according to the specifications in the manual, limited to 70hz to 17khz and bitrate is limited to 128kbps. It is quite good for a device sold as VOICE recorder. But do keep in mind that if you want to use it as a music player, you better transfer music via USB, not via the microphone jacks.

I bought this because the voice recorder on my phone wasn’t suitable for recording meetings and then trying to playback when I am writing the Minutes (I am the Secretary of a local Toastmasters club). With the Voice recorder on my phone, jumping back a few seconds was next to impossible and whenever I had to stop what I was doing and then come back later, I had to audibly search to find the spot where I left off. This recorder has settings for recording meetings in large rooms (which it does extremely well) and can reverse, pause and fast forward with ease. You can also set it to playback slightly faster or slower than the speed it originally recorded at.

I purchased it to record the audio of online programs. this recording if done thru phone’s mic is not good because external disturbances are also recorded, hence I needed a device that can record through jack. that purpose could not be solved with this device because recording through a chord is useless in this device. Voice recording too is so so, not very good. I never expected such a bad product from Olympus

It’s a great dictaphone, no doubt, but I was hoping to record some high quality music with it and here’s what I figured out: my iphone does a much better job of it. If you have good storage on your phone, you don’t need this device. The only issue is calls/messages disrupting a recording. I switch to flight mode. Anyway. As for a device, the conference mode is really powerful and useful. it’s user-friendly and it’s very efficient, w.r.t use of battery. The display is fantastic too; it’s compact & therefore, easy to manage.

Good quality and easy to use voice record. I record my classes where my professors often walk around the class room, and whether they’re near me or 10 feet away, the audio is clear and easy to hear.
A feature I’ve really come to enjoy is the USB port that slides out of the top, making downloading audio files to my computer fast and convenient.
4GB has given me roughly 60 hours of recording space, well above my needs for school.

First, I have not used this to record through the built it microphones, so I can’t comment on that aspect of the recorder. I use it to record from headphone level sources, and it works pretty well. The only problem is that the unit tries to boost the input signal when the source is very quiet, resulting in a lot of hissing in the recording.

Although it can use microSD cards, it can record to only either the internal memory or the SD card. I wish it has a copy function so that I can record into internal memory then make a back up copy to the SD card. You can plug the unit into a computer USB port using the built-in retractable USB plug and back up the files to the computer, but this is not always handy. The other thing that I wish for is to be able to name the five folders (which are named FOLDER A, FOLDER B, etc.) and the recording files.so that it is easier to manage and identify which folder/recording is for what.

Things that I like include the size, the built-in retractable USB plug, ease of use (very intuitive) and very easy on the batteries. All in all, I would recommend this recorder.

It does what it says on the tin. Good sound quality, easy to use and reliable. I wish it had a charging USB instead of batteries.

I purchased this product about 8 months back and have been in use since then.
    LIKES
    Small and very handy
    Good Battery life
Good options for recording quality and there by memory management.
Good in Built memory of 4GB.
    DISLIKES
The menu and operation is not very user friendly, the settings are not easy to follow.
When the moisture content in the air went high the buttons stopped working – Specific in Rainy days.
Tried to find Service centers in Bangalore , but i could not locate one that repair / service the Voice recorders?
    Thanks,
