If you tried your hardest to purposefully design a product that was a pain to use, you wouldn’t accomplish half of what HP has done with this device. It is a masterpiece of Kafkaesque torment, a crucible of woe. At times when I am forced to use it, I’m convinced I’ve died and gone to hell where I’m being punished for some ill deed. Even masochists should steer clear of this device for fear you’ll never know any other pleasure beyond it. That said the print quality is good should you have the spirit of Mr. Rogers within you required in order to be able to gently coerce it to do the one thing I presume it was designed to do as it is called a “printer” after all. That said, I’m not sure it’s designers intended for you to do anything of the sort and instead hoped to help you find some form of spiritual epiphany by giving you what I can only imagine is an accurate reflection of Dante’s 7th circle in order to save your soul. If so, it has backfired for I feel compelled to commit an act of brutality against this god forsaken device everytime I look at it.
In short, its the worst printer…nay, the worst piece of technology ever spawned into existence. Should you want any peace in your heart, steer well clear of it, I beg you!

I don’t know what people are complaining about. It’s so easy to install this printer and it takes a monkey to set it up. Just follow the instructions and you’re good to go. Overall it has good quality printing, it’s perfect for home and personal use. It has 6months of free printing supplies. It looks good and I like the wireless idea that I can print from any device.

This was very frustrating to set up because the recommended software (from Microsoft Store) has no option except to “search” for a printer. No LED display so there’s no way to manually connect to a wifi and enter the security password, won’t connect to 5G (and doesn’t tell you that), and although it has a pretty pulsing purple light, it never connected. I had to search for the drivers and software to download (DON’T do it from the MS Store), and connected it with a USB cable (not included) to connect to a 2.5G wifi. In the end, I said to hell with this and just will use it with the USB. Definitely NOT for a noob or someone with a secure network. Oh and HP wants to install a ton of bloatware….don’t do it.

nightmare set-up! HP set up software did not work. Sent printer back for full refund.
Spent 1 hr with on phone with tech help, even allowed remote access to my laptop. Tech knew nothing about product and midway through the process his servers crashed! Had to reboot my laptop, disk check fixed some errors and now the laptop cannot connect to my blue tooth mouse! I have purchased several laptops and printer from HP, always been happy. No more.

SIGNED UP FOR INSTANT INK. THEY CLAIMED IT WAS SHIPPED AUG.2 BUT I HAVE NOT RECEIVED IT. AFTER 3 CALLS TO THEIR HELP LINE AND A CALL TO CANADA POST ALL I GET IS THE RUN AROUND. HP SHIPPED IT BECAUSE THERE IS A TRACKING NUMBER THAT TAKES ME TO CANADA POST WHICH CLAIMS IT IS DELAYED EVEN AFTER 21 DAYS. HP WILL NOT SEND A REPLACEMENT AND CLAIMS THEY CANNOT UNTIL I INSTALL THE FIRST SET OF CARTRIDGES. SO HERE I AM OUT OF INK AND NO SIGN OF WHEN THEY WILL SHOW UP. EACH TIME I CONTACT THEM ALL I EVER GET IS I SHOULD WAIT A FEW MOR DAYS. SO UNTIL I GET THE FIRST PACKAGE FROM HP I WILL REMAIN OUT OF INK. THE PRINTER SCANNER WORK FINE AS LONG AS YOU HAVE INK. A BIT OF A PAIN TO SET UP BUT ONCE IT IS IT WORKS FINE.

I own the HP Envy 6455e All-in-One in addition to the HP Envy 6055e All-in-One. The only real difference between the two is that the HP Envy 6455e has an auto-document feeder and supports mobile fax. Other than that, it’s the exact same printer with the same basic features such as print speed, setup process, and day-to-day use. If you are use to printers that have auto-document feeders, or if you need to scan documents frequently, I recommend the HP Envy 6455e All-in-One instead.
I’ve been setting up HP printers for years now. I work in IT and I can confirm that the setup process for HP printers has actually gotten worse with the implementation of HP Smart. HP Smart is the application required to setup your printer and it’s the app you’ll use to access print functions such as camera scanning, printer scanning, photo and document printing, copying, and shortcut setup. Before HP Smart, you’d typically use direct WIFI to setup your printer and download the drivers from HP’s website. Nowadays, HP makes the model-specific driver download impossible to access from their website, unless you use a universal HP printer driver (google this if interested), which may or may not work and may or may not allow you to use all of the printer’s features or advanced functions.
So with that said, let’s dive into the pros and cons of this printer.
Pros
✅ Beautiful exterior design; aesthetically pleasing and doesn’t mess with your room’s design or flow
✅ HP+ extends the warranty of your printer and offers lengthy trial of HP Instant Ink for FREE
✅ HP Smart app for Android or iOS is actually quite useful (except for the setup process) for mobile printing
✅ Once setup, the printer is easy to use and manage on a day-to-day basis
✅ HP Instant Ink can potentially save you a great deal on ink costs if monitored properly. For example, if you print 60 pages per month, you can subscribe to the $4.99/month toner subscription plan which allows you to print up to 100 pages per month. In two months, when your ink is out, HP will ship you new ink and you will have only paid $10 over two months. This monthly subscription plan, if used consistently all year, will run you $60 annually which is the BEST price I’ve seen thus far and I’ve evaluated a few options.
✅ If not using HP Instant Ink, the price of a fresh set of genuine HP black+tri-color ink is $29.99 which is a reasonable price. You can double the yield (print twice as much) with a fresh set of genuine HP 67XL black+tricolor for only $38.99 which is a much better price. If printing 60 pages per month, and using standard cartridges, this will run you about $30 every two months or $180 annually. Using XL cartridges, it’ll cost $38.98 every four months or $120 annually.
Cons
❌ Printer setup is painful and without expertise and/or persistence, it can be a huge obstacle for the average user to setup
❌ HP Smart requires account registration before you can setup you printer for use
❌ HP Instant Ink requires that you understand how much you print on a regular basis; if you sign up for a plan because it’s cheaper on a monthly basis but it does not cover your print volume, you will be looking at “overages” for printing more than the amount your plan covers
❌ HP+ is only available for 6 days after the initial setup of the printer which means means you could potentially lose out on an additional year of warranty and a lengthy trial of HP Instant Ink if you don’t sign up for it during the setup process and then forget to sign up for it over the next 6 days
❌ Black ink cartridges (HP 67) when printing text-based documents only (i.e. no pictures), will last for approximately 120 pages. High yield blank ink cartridges (HP 67XL) will last for approximately 240 pages. Neither cartridge prints enough in my opinion so there’s little value in purchasing OEM ink outside of HP Instant Ink.
❌ You can NOT use third-party manufactured ink EVER with your printer if you plan to use HP Instant Ink; genuine HP ink is required to use this service
❌ Cost to purchase third-party manufactured ink is INSANE; it will not save you money to use non-OEM ink in this printer
❌ Costs to print using genuine HP ink is equally insane; you are better off using the HP Instant Ink subscription plan (and yes, I know, who needs more subscriptions?)
Let’s talk about the setup process because it’s hands-down the largest obstacle to the use of this printer.
DO NOT:
🚫 Use your phone to setup this printer. As of this review, you’ll get midway through the process only to be told that you need to be on a Windows or Mac device to complete setup so it’s a complete waste of time
🚫 Leave the proximity of your printer until the printer setup is completely finished
DO:
✅ Register for an account on HP Smart’s website (not HP, HP Smart) PRIOR to printer setup to make the setup less painful
✅ Use a Windows or Mac laptop that has bluetooth capabilities; be prepared for the setup process to tell you that a Mac isn’t compatible (don’t worry, it is) for printer setup
✅ Use a Windows or Mac laptop that is connected to the SAME wifi network as the printer (stick with 2.4 GHz) if bluetooth is not available on your laptop
✅ Sign up for HP+ (free) at the start of printer setup to double the length of your warranty and claim a lengthy trial of HP Instant Ink
✅ Use only genuine HP ink unless you plan to never use HP Smart Ink or HP+
✅ Purchase paper PRIOR to setup or you’ll be stuck midway through setup when prompted to print an alignment page and can’t because you don’t have paper
Once you unbox the printer, use the included power cable to plug it in. Grab your Windows or Mac laptop and confirm that Bluetooth is turned on. If bluetooth is not available, connect to the 2.4 GHz wireless network (as opposed to the 5 GHz). Download HP Smart from the App Store or from the Windows store. Once downloaded, open HP Smart on your laptop. From there, sign into your HP Smart account (or create one and then sign in if you didn’t do this before hand) and select Add a Printer after sign-in is complete. If prompted to enable bluetooth, then enable bluetooth. If prompted to use the direct-wifi network, follow the instructions. You should be able to see a printer listed that you can select to setup if the bluetooth or wireless setup instructions were followed carefully. Once you select that printer, you should be directed to sign up for HP+. This is free, will extend your warranty coverage to 2-years rather than just the standard 1-year, and will give you a lengthy free trial of HP Instant Ink. Trust me, you’re going to want that extra year of warranty coverage as it will come in handy. You can always cancel HP Instant Ink if it’s not for you. Toss some paper in the printer tray, install the print cartridges (can only be done with the printer powered on), and print+scan the alignment page when prompted to do so. This should wrap up the printer setup and allow you to use the printer.
The setup process is going to take you 30-60 minutes to unbox the printer, remove all the tape, install the paper (not included) and cartridges, connect the printer to the network, and print an alignment page. However, since I finished the printer setup, I haven’t had to mess with the printer or its settings and I find that the printer is relatively easy to use on a day-to-day basis. I try not to rate a product based on one aspect and consider the whole product as it pertains to cost and value so for that reason I gave it four stars and removed a star for the printer setup process and the cost to print on a monthly or annual basis. In general, it’s expensive to own and use a consumer-grade printer and the important thing to remember is that yes, this printer is only $129.99, but you’ll spend at least that much purchasing genuine ink over the next 1-2 years (depending on which ink solution you select) so the true cost of the printer is much more than the advertised $129.99. Keep that in mind, use the printer responsibly, and you should be able to balance the costs and convenience associated with owning a printer.

HP Smart is NOT smart.
I already have an HP printer at home and love everything about it except for the HP “Smart” app. For the price, quality and convenience of Instant Ink, it’s been the most satisfying printer purchase I’ve had. What mostly happens is that the HP Smart app cannot recognize the printer on WiFi, so I would have to reconnect using the display panel.
Now, I need to get one for my office and was hesitant about having to solely rely on the app, but took a chance because this model is thermal inkjet which I haven’t had before. After setup, it was fantastically usable for a day until it went offline and needed to reconnect. This is an impossible task! I thought perhaps HP Smart had an improvement in the last few years, but see now that it’s as dumb as ever. I’m returning this and purchasing another HP with a display panel.

Setup was actually really easy. After reading some of the reviews, I was a little scared but I was ready to print in about 10 minutes. It isn’t instant plug in and use, but go to the website on the instructions and follow the steps and voila. I’m sure I will go through ink quickly as it is being used for a home office, but I don’t think it matters which printer you buy. At least the cartridges for this printer are cheaper that the ones from my last hp printer. Happy with it so far.

I finally had to buy a new printer because my trusty old HP printer (over 11 years of use!) finally started having issues. After much research and wading through several bad reviews on every printer I looked at, I decided to go with this one and crossed my fingers that it would be a good experience.
Everything started out fine, going through the process, but when it reached the step to connect to my wifi, it just would not, no matter what I tried, no matter what device I tried it on. I’m not new to technology and this type of thing should have been an easy process for me. Instead it was 6 hours of nothing working and complete frustration! Finally, I decided to just connect it with USB (USB cord doesn’t come with the printer btw), grabbed the USB cord from my old printer and gave it a go. After another hour of downloading the driver from HP’s website, and going through the lengthy installation, and it was connected via USB. Yay, time to print right? THINK AGAIN.
When I put the ink cartridges in, I instantly got an error message stating that the color cartridge was not communicating with the printer and no matter what I did, it would not work. I read page after page of other similar issues (many of those to be found with this printer!!) and finally realized that my brand new cartridge or the cartridge compartment in the brand new printer was defective. Seriously!? So I ordered another ink cartridge from HP for $25 to see if it would work in the ink compartment.
With time constraints on needing a working printer ASAP, I then decided to just send the defective printer back and have it replaced with the same model replacement. I was actually still hopeful I could make it work. Thankfully, I read the reviews on the actual ink cartridges for this printer and found out that they run out after 30 to 40 pages, though stating they will print 100 pages (still too low anyway). Since I can’t connect to the subscription program through HP, and receive ink monthly, and would need to order my cartridges on an as needed basis, this was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
I ordered a completely different printer that hopefully will suit my printing needs better and will not arrive defective and unable to connect wirelessly!
Would NEVER recommend this printer. Its too costly on ink and not user friendly at all. Don’t bother, trust me. Horrible experience.

I barely got this out of the box (which was sealed by the manufacturer, tape and all), when I noticed small sharp cuts on one side, and 3 large smears on the cover. The smears wouldn’t come off with a towel and some soapy water. This is a white/light-grey coloured printer, so the damage is jarring from all angles. Highly disappointed, as I needed this urgently for work and don’t have access to a car. Will have to lug this big box on a city bus.

After 5+ hours being transferred from rep to rep, none of which seemed to know what to do other than, “Let’s try this…,” “Maybe this will work…,” rep not calling back at our appointment time, claiming that she had another long call – however, she said I’d be her first call when she arrives at work the next day. 1.5 hours late. When she did call, she did everything she did the day before with nothing new to add. FINALLY, someone decided to send the case to be expedited – they just thought of that now??? HP, your Envy 6000 series is now on its way home to you. What a waste of my time trying to connect the unconnectable.

Received printer on 23 April. On 24 May printer broke. All lights on printer plinking. Will not print. Talked to tech support from 10 AM on the 26th of May until 6 PM. They said they never saw anything like this and could not fix it. Amazon said I could not return it after 23 May. The printer does not work and is still under warranty. HP said Amazon should make it good but Amazon said they would not take it back. I need a replacement. What should I do.
