Being a pharmacist that is very passionate about cooking, I had to purchase this hefty mortar & pestle set. My profession has allowed me countless times of compounding drugs with a mortar & pestle.
PROS: Very reasonable price for the quality.
The weight & texture of a mortar & pestle will speed your crushing/grinding & pulverizing. Both weight & texture are critical for your end result as well as speed to your finished product.
If you season EXACTLY as recommended, the set is a quick & easy cleanup with JUST water. No soap unless you want the taste of soap in your next meal.
The weight is important as it will withstand all the stress applied during use as well as stay in place so you are not chasing it around your counter surface.
CONS: None
NOTES: As previously mentioned “season” your mortar & pestle per manufacturer instructions. The seasoning process can become boring as well as lengthy. So try these tips. Again per the manufacturer, add a handful of rice to the mortar and work until it is “white”. My interpretation is “white” means crush the rice until it is a powder before you proceed with the other seasoning steps.
INHO this will speed the “rice powder” step along. With a strong grip of the pestle smash the rice into the curved edge where the side meets th e bottom of the mortar. Simply put, crush it. Stirring in a circle to work the rice will take forever. Break the rice into small pieces, then up you can begin to work the rice in a circle while concentrating your power in the corner curve of he bowl.
Sorry this is lengthy, but my goal is to help you season your mortar & pestle correctly & speedily allowing you great results for the life of your set. (No I do not work for the seller or Amazon. Just a pharmacist like many others, always looking to help)

I just got it yesterday and in the process of curing it broke! Is there a way I can get a replacement?

Got the polished black. Seems solid, very happy with the size.
Don’t forget to season it before use!

I used a combination of spending a night grinding water and letting the slurry help make a polish, and following the seasoning instructions.
I’ve been using this set for months. Sturdiness? You could legit bludgeon a raging bear to death with the mortar. Rinse it off, and then go back to making the dry rub for the ribs you were going to make. The pestle? Goddess wept, that would easily break the extremities of zombie-infected 7 year olds with zero kung fu skills.
That’s great, but this set isn’t just there to help you survive the zombie apocalypse.
It’s daunting how finely I’ve been able to grind herbs and spices with this set. My pepper grinder is now shooting looks of black hatred and green jealousy because of the mortar and pestle set which has supplanted it. I keep this stored in the top shelf of my cabinet. Not only is this great for the culinary masterpieces it will help you create, you could lift and lower this thing several times for a great upper arm workout. “Never skip arm day”, you say? You don’t have to, you have this mortar and pestle!
Rinse it out with water and your fingers, dry it off, get a quick workout in, and plan your next amazing dish. The seasoning is a pain (both in your arms and your a**). But you put that work in, and you have an amazing mortar and pestle which will, yes, help you survive the zombie apocalypse or local bear rabies epidemic.

Fantastic mortar and pestle! I was a little overwhelmed by the selection of granite mortar and pestles here on Amazon, but chose the Gorilla Grip Medium based on reviews and pics—looked sturdy, well made, and the reviews consensus agreed. And they were right—this thing is the prefect weight and does it’s job very well, and rinses sparkling clean with only water (after proper seasoning). I’ve been impressed and wonder how I got along without this thing for so long.
If you’re on the fence about size—the medium (6”) is a good adequate size for those cooking for 2-3 people, maybe even for 4, depends on appetites. Largish quantities of spices and aromatics are no problem, what I am talking about here is guacamole or pesto.
Seasoning was easy enough—my second batch of rice came out white, but I did a third round, filling the mortar cup about 3/4 full of rice to focus on grinding at the sides; it’s easy to grind away at the bottom and the overall lower bowl during seasoning, but the sides are a little trickier…! Finished my seasoning by smashing to a paste two batches of garlic/ginger/cumin seeds/coriander seeds, spreading it evenly all over the interior of the mortar and over the pestle, and then letting it sit on overnight (12 hours). A little excessive? Yeah, but it allowed me to use and bond with this great new kitchen ally, and it’s now easy to rinse very clean with no trace of odor/residue lingering within the unpolished granite whatsoever. Highly recommend this mortar and pestle!

Loved this product. Solid Granite. Well made. Tried to grind some rice and as you can see in the pic, it came out very well. Got it for 16.99 and it was the cheapest 2 cup mortar available during my purchase.
Guess i am the first one to review this. Buy without hesitation. There are other expensive mortar, but the expectation is to grind spices and all stones do the same.
I am happy with my purchase. Get one before its gone. Not sure if it will be available for the same price for long.
