I love this GPS . Used it today when was out and it alerted me of a accident that just happened and to avoid that area if posable . It is worth way more then what I paid for it and would highly recommend it.

    Does what it needs to.
Bluetooth takes a bit of figuring out between phone and headset but once its done it is seamless.
I thought it was missing some info screens but after using it for a week I found a lot were hidden or not immediately apparent.
Overall it is good for what it is. It may take you some time to get used to it.
Value for the money is a point. Once up a running I was very satisfied, but it makes you wonder if you can get a smart phone for about the same or less it seems over-priced,.I tried using a smartphone on a mount but it is not as safe as using this I find.

I like the unit itself. Installation was fairly easy. Garmin basecamp is a complete disaster, however. For those who don’t know, it’s the program for your pc to plan custom trips. It took me several attempts, numerous crashes, and about 3 hours to plan a route. By the time I had finished, and (hopefully) got it right, I had the whole damn route memorized! So maybe just download Basecamp and frustrate yourself into memorizing your route intead of buying a $600 unit. But, of course you can’t do that, because the gps must be linked to your computer to access the maps. Anyway, like I said, I like the unit, and I’m sure I’ll get years of enjoyment out of it, but Garmin needs to take a page from Google Map’s book and design a trip planner that actually works.

This is the fourth Garmin product i have purchased. I have been using a Zumo 590 for the last 10 years and have been very happy with it. Unfortunately, I purchased the Zumo 396 late in the year and mounted it on my bike just in time to put the bike away for the season. I am looking at buying a mount for the Jeep(you have to buy this separately) so I can play with the new Zumo before the next riding season. I did ride to the gas station the other day and found the screen easy to see in the sunlight.

Have Zumo 660 on my adventure bike. Recently bought a dualsport (CRF250 Rally) for local rides, fishing, exploring etc and wanted a dedicated GPS. Figured it was similar/same as my other Garmin.
It is, but just a bit better than the 660. The 396LMT-S has wifi so updating maps is easy. Bluetooth to phone, which I dont use as I have a Sena headset…but I bought the weather app ($7) or so I can see weather radar real time. Very cool. Same waypoint and routing as all Garmins, no surprise there. And if you didnt wonder before…yes there is a place for an SD card for Topo or whatever. The onboard maps are good enough for me to not NEED to get OSM’s installed.
Pretty impressed. Came with Ram mounts.

Tried lots of options. Phone battery needs a charger, bike vibration not optimal so looked to a dedicated unit. Motorcycle GPS units have different functions than car units. Car units will not pair with in helmet communicators and have no weather protection. This one is accurate and easy to read. Bought multiple mounts to make moving from bike to bike easy. Would have preferred the larger screen but the price is a ripoff by Garmin.

Just Beware this screen is not ultra bright. At the wrong angle to the sun it is barely unreadable the same as the old Zumo units. I only purchased it because the price of the other units is ridiculous. Still having a hard time getting it to sync to my Bluetooth headset devices.

Used this on a 4500km western USA bike trip all directions worked well, Still has issues when you take an long off ramp the GPS will start rerouting you another route, as it assumes that you have missed the exit ramp it happened on at least three occasions at major I90 freeway off ramps.

    First the pros:
Nice screen size. Rugged, dropped it on hard asphalt a couple of times and didn’t even scratch it. Pretty decent navigation UI. Won’t overheat and shut down like a phone. Weatherproof.

    Cons:
Basecamp software is horrible. Very confusing,non-intuitive and overly complicated (am I planning a trip, laying down a route, hiking ?) . many times you export a route to the GPS and it will still redo the path based on device settings, completely ignoring any custom routing you may have done in the desktop app. You really need to keep one eye on the darn thing and make sure it’s not going to lead you down the garden path.
The biggest problem though is the new “Incident detection” system, which is supposed to pair with a phone to send an SMS to designated contact if the device thinks you’ve been in an accident. Unfortunately, this “detection” is set off by a fruitfly passing within 10 feet of your motorcycle. I rode 9000 miles last month and the on-device popup (which consumes 1/3rd of your screen) was on for pretty much the whole time. There is no way to turn this feature off, and it does not matter if you have no phone connected or SMS notification number configured.

Apparently Garmin has promised to fix this in a future update, so maybe wait for that update. Or look at advrider forums on advice on how to use a rugged $50 phone instead.

I’ve wasted money on cheaper units that don’t hold up. Finally decided to bite the bullet and buy a quality unit. Mostly happy with my purchase. A word of caution, since Covid a lot of small road side restaurants are closed and the Adventurous Routing will often add a bunch of pointless turns into your route (like subdivisions and industrial districts) for no apparent reason. So remember to turn it off for day to day use.
