Katherine Oppenheimer was a German American botanist, biologist, and wife of Los Alamos Laboratory director J. Robert Oppenheimer . After her birth in Germany, Katherine Puening moved with her family to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at age three and spent the rest of her childhood in the area. Her Katherine Vissering " Kitty " Oppenheimer (née Puening; August 8, 1910 – October 27, 1972) was a German American biologist and botanist. She was a member of the Communist Party of America until leaving in the 1930s.
