Kanhoji Angre Island, or Khanderi Island, is one of those places which can be considered as an ideal place to visit on the weekend. Situated around 20 km towards the south of Mumbai, the small island comprises of some fortifications and a lighthouse. Kanhoji Angre stands alone in the list of early freedom fighter of Bharat as the one person who stood undefeated and inflicted many casualties on colonial powers. Kanhoji Angre or Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre was the first major chief of the Maratha Navy after the death of Sidhoji Gujar in 1697 AD. He was widely known as the “ Shivaji of the sea “ and the Lord of Kolaba and neighbouring water . Kanhoji Angre ([kanʱod͡ʒiː aːŋɡɾe]), also known as Conajee Angria or Sarkhel Angré (August 1669 – 4 July 1729) was a Maratha Navy admiral. Kanhoji became known for attacking and capturing European East Indiamen and collecting jakat (known to locals as taxes), seen by Europeans traders and colonists as ransoming of their crews.
