Chandigarh, a union territory of India, is the capital of two states, Haryana and Punjab. Chandigarh means - The Fort of Chandi. The name was orignated from an ancient temple called Chandi Mandir, dedicated to the Goddess Chandi. Chanadigarh is occasionally referred to as The City Beautiful. The city of Chandigarh , within the Chandigarh union territory, serves as the capital of that territory and also the states of Haryana and Punjab. Haryana was created in 1966 from the partition of the former state of Punjab into Punjabi-speaking Punjab and Hindi-speaking Haryana. Haryana surrounds the country's capital territory of Delhi on three sides (north, west and south), consequently, a large area of Haryana state is included in the economically important National Capital Region of India for the purposes of planning and development.
