Esther Duflo (born October 25, 1972, Paris, France) is a French-American economist who, with Abhijit Banerjee and Michael Kremer, was awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize for Economics (the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel) for helping to develop an innovative experimental approach to alleviating global poverty. Esther Duflo is the Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics in the Department of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL). Esther Duflo was born in Paris, where her mother was a pediatrician and her father a professor of mathematics. After studying history and economics at the École Normale Superieure and elsewhere, she completed her doctorate in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1999.
