The spread of Aryan -speaking peoples from the Pontic-Caspian steppes into South Asia and Iran facilitated the development of various languages in the Indo-Iranian family, reflecting the deep cultural and linguistic impact of Aryan migration on both regions. Aryan is probably one of the most misused and abused words ever to come out of the field of linguistics. What the term Aryan actually means and what it has come to mean are two vastly different things. Aryan is a designation originally meaning “civilized”, “noble”, or “free” without reference to any ethnicity. It is regarded by many that the Aryans crossed the Hindu Kush Mountains and migrated into the Indian subcontinent by 1500 BCE while several others believe that Aryans are indigenous to India.
