Great device that works well with my session 4. The remote was easy to setup and use, however I would not say the same thing for the camera itself. The first camera failed and had to be returned after it died while trying to connect to my computer and sync with the remote.

cons: you have to resync the remote every time you turn off the camera or transfer video to the desktop app.I see why (once you transfer and reset the camera its goes back to the base setting) but its still a pain the first few times your use it, as you have to get used to the fact that the remote is no longer synced and must be done every time.

There was no issue with the second camera, the remote synced and worked properly.

I bought this product because GoPro removed the ability to control the Protune settings through the free app. GoPro…if you’re reading this, you’re not cool!

This thing does what it should. It pairs easily and controls the camera. At the moment I’m not interested how many cameras I can control and/or at what distance.

It’s going back because the screen soooo small. Like REALLY small. Smaller than a tiny postage stamp. To make matters worse, the contrast is too low to easily make anything out and there is no way to adjust it.

I’m going to consider a competing cheaper product that has better contrast and a bigger screen as a selling point.

It’s nice to have the brand name…just not in this case.

I purchased the GoPro Smart Remote for my GoPro Hero 3 in order to bring it to a trip to Hawaii.
Overall, the remote works well outside water and its battery lasts for almost a day (depending on how much you use your camera).
It’s fairly convenient to take pictures with it – specially on selfies. =)

However, there is a big drawback for me: It does not work underwater at all. The manufacturer mentions it on a somewhat hidden FAQ on its website. However, there’s nothing talking about it at Amazon. It was pretty disappointing when I went diving for the first time and could not use it. Beware!

I am not particularly impressed by this remote control, it simply doesn’t work reliably. I wanted to use it to switch on two GoPros at the same time. I gave up and almost smashed the remote control through the wall. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, sometimes it shows it’s connected, but it isn’t and sometimes it is the other way around. Actually it is rubbish and far too expensive. To be fair it works with one GoPro, but definitely not reliably with two or even more GoPros. I would never ever buy it again.

update, original review is below. i just updated my rating to 4 stars from 2. its very useful if you have your camera mounted on a boat with an external power supply (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0010GW3YO) i still think its overpriced and drains the battery excessively. it also lasts about a day on a charge – not an issue if you have power all night – quite an issue if you only have electricity for 1.5 hrs (thats what we get up north in a lodge) not using wifi to connect to camera whould have been a better choice, something like lowpower bluetooth would have likely worked better. otherwise it does what they claim it supposed to – it turns the camera on and off and allows changing settings.

it works. thats about the only good thing about it.
its useless and drains camera battery excessively. its also overpriced. maybe i will change my mind in a summer but so far – meh

    1) the screen is too small and is the lettering, the physical dimensions are fine, but the size of the LCD screen needs to be larger, letters on screen need to be a lot bigger.
    2) In normal sunlight the screen LCD goes dark/black and I am unable to read anything on the screen.
    3) Once you have paired both the gopro and remote, it all works perfectly, however it only works for a short while(15-20min) and then the remote no longer communicates with camera and none of the remote functionality works – at all, this happens all the time.

I have to agree with a number of previous reviewers that the display is difficult to view on the remote. In low light it is hard to read because it is an LCD without a backlight. In bright sunshine it is difficult, even when shading with my hand, due to the glare washing out the poor contrast of the display.

Range on the unit works well when using with my GoPro Session on gimbal or hat brim. Have not yet run into battery life issues though have seen many others complaining about that as an issue.

It arrived quickly and in perfect shape.

Got this specifically for a job involving large machinery (bulldozers) where I would need to set the cameras up & then activate at specific times and needed to do it remotely as once the dozers were in action I couldn’t stop them.
Had multiple issues getting the cameras to connect & stay connected so I updated both (Hero 7 Black) to the latest firmware, then again manually, reset the ‘smart’ remote. Seemed to work ok in the office although when the battery is changed they reset and you have to pair again (this is a ‘feature’ according to the GoPro rep on their help chat).
Got on site, paired the cameras & remote, the dozers started work and the remote completely failed to pick up either camera. They were less than 20m from me and still no connection whatsoever. I wasted an entire day’s filming thanks to this hopeless remote and the opportunity to film this was a one off. I was fuming.
I had also hoped that GoPro might have worked out how you could control multiple cameras independently with the remote but it either switches them both on & off at the same time or not at all, as in my experience.
GoPro connectivity has always been flaky in my experience but these days this is unacceptable. Very disappointed.

Using it with a hero 8 black. It can’t connect on its own if it has been previously paired. I wait 2 minutes and it still doesn’t connect. I have to restart the pairing process all over again.

When it is paired it will often freeze. No buttons will respond but holding power for 10 seconds to shut down. Then I need to repair again.

Sometimes the freeze happens while recording, sometimes while waiting.

It’s a good idea to have one of these remotes if you carry a number of GoPro’s in your kit bag. The remote can have up to 50 GoPro’s paired via the GoPro WiFi comms option and makes syncing of content capture simple to do. I can have up to 4 GoPro’s set up at any one time, usually placed around my motorbike or sometimes on other riders bikes. As long as you are within around 10 meters you can simply hit a the record button and have them all trigger at the same time.

The remote also gives you the option to change the capture state (and other settings) of your GoPro’s from video/loop to photo modes. Great if you are using GoPro Sessions which are always fiddly to configure. The biggest advantage is that you can start and stop recording capturing only of the content you want without having to have the camera’s rolling all the time. This saves you having to trawl through vast amounts of unwanted video when editing, but more importantly saves space on your SD card and also extends the battery life of the power hungry GoPro’s, which means you don’t miss out on crucial action shots.

Purchased this item brand new. Have tried charging 4 times only for it to die before ever being used. The product (or presumably the battery) is defective. Apparently it would have been better to go with the no-name clone version which I did consider but was willing to pay premium for assumed quality and reliability of name brand. My mistake. Called GoPro and spent a half hour of my time sending them various receipts, photos and information. They decided to replace but insisted that I spend more of my time repackaging and shipping the defective product back to them prior to replacement.

In summary, I spent $114 +tax for the name brand GoPro version of this remote (in my opinion way over priced for what it is in the first place) and this is before factoring in the time spent for me to diagnose the problem, deal with GoPro tech support, repackage and ship the defective product back to them, and then wait several days/weeks/or months to finally receive a product that works as advertised. I’m not sure why GoPro thinks that this is an acceptable solution. On a more positive note, I now have a $114 paper weight.

Purchased the remote a few days after I came back from a trip. Never opened the package for 7 months until i started prepping for my next adventure. Remote would not connect with my go pro. Contacted go pro support and they told me i would have to pay for repairs as its now outside 6 month warranty repair window. I should have tried it out inside the window, but when you pay the premium for the go pro name, you expect quality gear
