I originally compared these to the DT770 pro 80 ohm, honestly no comparison. The audio quality is muddy and cheap on the M50x’s. I compared the DT770’s to numerous other models of BD, Sennheiser and AT – including the Solid Bass AT’s, Sennheiser HD600’s and 650s, DT770 pro 250 ohm – and still the DT770 pro 80 ohm were WAY on top.

THEN – I tried the ATH-MSR7’s, and actually managed to find a headphone that beat the DT770’s. The same present yet clear lows, and extremely clear mids and highs, withough being piercing and sibilant – just clear and detailed

In essence, the M50x rate at the BOTTOM of this list of headphones.

Skip these, spend a few more bucks and get the MSR7’s, they are leaps and bounds better than the M50x’s. Better build, much better sound, better looking.

I was looking to replace a set of Senheiser headphones I’d had for quite some years. The headphones had really seen better days as they are my “day to day” set that get used on anything from a laptop, mobile phone or even my Hi-fi or Sony Hi-Res Audio Player. I own a series of Beyer Dynamic headphones that are souley for studio use. Their impedance are quite high and in order for me to get the best from them I would have to get an additional headphone amp to carry about with me. For me that kind of defeats the object of what I need for my “everyday cans”.
As I am sure you have all noticed, it can be a bit of a mine field on here, well anywhere in fact when buying things and I include headphones. I am not into “blutooth” stuff, for me they affect the original source too much. I can’t bare the whole “Beats” range or Bose. They really do sound like toilet ( putting it bluntly and politely). Once you have taken these types out of the equasion, you either have cheap unknown brands or you have to step up into the real “Audiophile” area which can come at a huge premium and sometimes even then, you don’t get the full benefit as they require an external amp to power the high impedance.
I had a shortlist of brands from Grado, Senheiser and Klipische to Sony, B&W, Beyer Dynamic and of course, Audio Technica.
I used a mixture of youtube reviews, customer reviews here and my own brand experience and audio knowledge. I was very close to getting a set of Grados, but I really want closed back designs as I may want to use them in either a broadcast situation or also in publice. There is nothing worse than being “THAT Person” with heaven knows what bleeding out of their earphones, intruding on other people’s space when not only can you not make out what it is, but even if you could, you don’t wanna hear it “second hand”. So with that all in mind, I went for these ATH-M50x headphones.
I listen to a vast array of genres and styles, plus of course whatever a multimedia feed on a mobile device or laptop web browser my throw my way and I am intending to challenge them.
There are differing views on whether to “burn in” headphones or not. Now for me it depends. If they are a cheap brand or a “fashion brand” like beats or bose, I really would worry, but knowing Audio-Technica products as I do, their products really do benefit from a “run in” time. I am using a “self made” pink noise track. an hour long on loop (repeat) at 96khz, 24 bit. If you are wondering, which “colour” noise to use, for test and run in purposes always use pink noise. White noise has a slightly boosted top and mid, while the Brownian noise (not to be confused with the brown note haha) has a boosted lower end. The idea is to have an equal balanced frequancy range (which is what pink noise is) and let that play for…well however long you feel. THe usual time is about 8hrs upwards. Of course you can play music through them for that period constantly, but again, I want to burn in all parts equally so I use pink noise.
So, anyway, back on topic, I have been burning these in for 8hrs and I am now listening to them while writing this “review”.
You really have to go a long way to beat the quality in both build and sonic performance of these headphones in their price range. These really do resemble a flat response headphone. What you hear is your playback device and audio file quality. Comparing the same track (bit rate and depth) with these headphones on my Lenovo Laptop verses my Sony NWZ-A10 High Res Audio player has never been so different. Via my laptop’s internal soundcard the sound was “ok” nothing to write home about and they sound like I would expect from a £60 set of headphones. Putting them on a decent source such as the Sony….wow! Whole new dimension! Theres plenty of punch, warmth and depth, together with detail galore. Every frequency has “space”. At no point do these headphones sound restricted or limited. Mid range is clear and smooth and the highs are very pleasent indeed. They are not “biting” and “shrill” at all. This kind of sound means that long periods of listening won’t be fatiguing at all. I then took it them to try a 96khz at 24bit audio file. There is so much “space” in the audio. vocals are very clean and central, acoustic bass drums are heavenly. Lots of punch and depth, yet leave room so you can hear the resonant skin too. There is great channel speration. I find it very easy to “place” things in a mix with these on. Using a reference such as Doug Macleod’s Exactly Like This album. It is a very natural sounding, open, listening experience.
The build of these hedphones has been carefully thought through. The head band is very flexible and will fit pretty mch any head shape with comfort and ease. The actual Earphones themselves will rotate a full 180 degrees each. Again, making them fit ears and heads of all shapes and sizes. The “height” of the earphones adjusts very smoothly and they have a premium feel in general.
In the box they provide 3 different styles of cable. A short one for mobile devices, a longer version for studio or hifi situations and then a “curly” version of the studio/hi-fi cable. As if that wasn’t enought they give you a soft carry case (although I will buy a hard case for mine as I have a habit of throwing stuff in a bag when in a hurry).
All in all I am over the moon with these headphones. The Senheisers are like muddy plastic boxes in comparisson. These ATH-M50x don’t “exagerate” anything to the point of being distracting and “untrue” to the original source, however they will only be as good as the source you use.
If you listen to “chart” stuff, you will hear the compression and saturation that happens as they try to push stuff to the limit all the time. If you then try something recorded with some actual “air” and dynamics in it, you will hear just what I am talking about.
If you like well balanced, honest sound, suitable for long periods then this is for you. If you have these in a short list. Wait no longer, just put them in your basket and thank me later.

These are the best over ear headphones you can buy for the price, bar none. Don’t get confused by the ‘by the price’ comment, truly they could be sold for 300$ and still be worth the value. It took about 5 hours for the speaker cones to break in and once they did the sound was noticeably cleaner and balanced. Decent sub punch, but these are more your all round sound headies. Loud enough to Dj, flat enough to produce and punchy enough to enjoy listening to music. Classical sounds particularly precise, the sound range allowing you to hear things you might not have before; someone shifting in their seat, someone taking a breath, truly expansive.

I also have Dre Beats Solo, which truly can’t be compared to the ath50s as they are geared towards specifically enhancing music listening enjoyment, Whereas the ath50s touch on all aspects of headphone music clarity.

After using these for about a year, I can successfully say these are the best pair of headphones I have ever owned – comes with three different cables for a variety of uses. I use it in the studio and just listening to music, and the quality is perfect for a mid range set of headphones. Not only that, but they have an amazing build. Easy to clean and transport, despite many bangs and hits they still look brand new.

The price here is worth it – you won’t own another set of headphones for a long time.

Edit : Updating the rating from 4 to 5 stars, after 10 months of usage. As the title says, I totally fell in love with it.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________
This review is for those, who are confused regarding the hype of M50X. I personally did not like the sound signature earlier. But after a lot of tweaking with equalizer and with enabling spatial sound (Dolby Atmos for windows 10), I am slowly falling in love with these headphones. It requires time to get used to the signature of sound if you are hardcore bass lovers.

So here is my full review which I would like to break down by points :

    1) SOUND Quality:

BASS 9/10: Excellent production of bass. After increasing bass levels in Equalizer, it just pumps right amount of bass and is very deep and punchy.
MIDS 7 /10: Mids are okay, balanced. Vocals are crisp and bass does not overpower the mids.
HIGHS 5 / 10: Awful. It’s very bright. I had to lower down some higher frequencies in order to resolve my headache.

I come from Sennheiser background where I had PX 80, PX 95, CX 175, HD 202, HD 203 and HD598 SR. I also have Sony MDR 550AP. So comparing to those, sound signature of ATH is different. If you directly plug in these headphones without configuring and tweaking equalizer as per your needs, then you would be disappointed, as I was on the first day of listening to these.

I thought, maybe, I should try configuring properly. I googled frequency response and balanced equalizer as per my needs. I have uploaded my EQ settings. So below review is purely depending on my personalized EQ setting.

Now, these headphone sound damn amazing, I could not believe the experience after enabling Dolby Atmos for Headphones (Windows 10 feature). It’s brilliant. Even it sounds great on Windows Sonic spatial configuration. Just disable 7.1 virtual surround. Uncheck the box in sound setting. Games and movies sounds epic. High quality audio files have new dimension to it now. Especially A.R Rahman songs (Dil se and Jiya Jale recording in Berkeley University). If you love bass, these will definitely sound better than HD598. But if you love immersion and wider soundstage, no one can beat Sennheiser HD598 under 10k budget.

However sound quality is very subjective, as many people prefer high bass, many prefer higher clarity. These headphones can be “ADJUSTED” according to your needs. Hence I can say, out of the box its not good, but it definitely has that capability to be the best if you give it proper attention.

    2) BUILD QUALITY 10/10 : Simply excellent. It feels premium. Very strong. It looks durable, many people have been using these for years. Although not sure about ear cups, as they wear out in one year or so.

    3) COMFORT 9/10 (Edited) : When I posted this review, I found it very difficult to wear these for long hours, but after 10 months of usage, the comfort level is far better now. I have used it for watching back to back movies, playing games for 4-6 hours straight without any issue. Although in warm weather, it may get a bit sticky. No issues in air conditioned room.

    4) NOISE CANCELLATION 6/10: Not that good. I can hear ambient noise. It reduces up to 50 percent. Best to listen in quiet environment.

    5) SOUND LEAK 10/10: Sound does not leak at all. Person sitting next to you will not be disturbed at all, even on high volume.

    6) Accessories 10/10 : Good carrying pouch, 3 wires as per different needs.

I, like many others here, made the huge mistake of buying these headphones based on a handful of reviews by trusted Youtube creators (*facepalm). The problem being that most of these Youtube creators either:

    A) Haven’t really listened to any headphones of relatively decent audio quality beyond ‘Beats’ by Dre (which are also total garbage) or a pair of similarly overpriced brand name IEM’s.

    Or

    B) Have simply been paid to promote certain products they were, more often than not, given for free.

And sadly this is exactly what seems to be the case with these ATH-MX50’s. Seriously to think that these have had so many positive reviews after actually having used them for a good few months now completely astonishes me, because in short these headphones just sound ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!!!!

I’m sure defenders of these headphones will say things like “these headphones are meant to be for monitoring purposes so they’re meant to sound flat and centred at all times and are not meant to have a wide sound stage” etc. etc… And that would be great if they actually had the the capacity for delivering detailed and accurate sound but they don’t do that either. In fact while the bass and lower end is quite rich and punchy at times anything above that is just a total swampy mess of either muffled noise or ear-drum ripping treble, sometimes both!!! Which is actually quite an achievement if you think about it, but something that is completely unjustifiable at this price.

So yes, in my opinion you should only buy these if you are some kind of masochist who likes to torture your ears and is looking to turn your entire music library into the aural equivalent of a CIA waterboarding. For the the price there are soooooo many better options out there, including:

    – Audio Technica’s very own ATH-MX40’s (almost £50 cheaper than these pieces of garbage).
    – Sivga 006’s (beautiful well built closed-back headphones).
    – Superlux HD668B (amazing super budget open-back headphones, especially if you swap the pads).
    – Koss KSC75’s (£15 earclips that still sound a 100 times better than the ATH-M50X’s).
    – Taotronics Sound Surge 46 (great budget bluetooth headphones).
    – Philips SHP9500 (simply one of the best, if not THE BEST, open-back headphones for under £100).

Though to be fair outside of these suggestions even a £20 pair of Sony’s from the local market will sound better and be more comfortable than the ATH-M50X’s.

    Additional:
If it’s too late and, like me, you’ve already bought these headphones then I’ve found the best way to make them almost serviceable as listening devices is to swap the stock pads for a pair of Misodiko ear cushions (search Amazon) then cut and place a layer of craft felt and a couple of layers of good quality kitchen towel between the new cushions and the driver of each earcup. They will still sound flat as hell but at least the nightmare treble wont dissolve your brain.

My experience with these headphones started out amazing, they sounded great and were super comfortable, offering pretty decent sound isolation. After regular use, the poor build quality of the frame started to surface. First in the form of the ear cups flaking and becoming increasingly uncomfortable. The next common issue that will occur is the hinge retainer pin breaking, causing one side of the headphones to hyperextend outwards, sitting incredibly uncomfortably. This tiny retainer pin is made of cheap plastic, and could easily have been made with aluminum or stainless to increase the lifetime of these headphones. It’s clearly an example of planned obsolescence and a way for the manufacturer to force you to buy a new set (since the problem isn’t easily fixed, and the parts aren’t readily available. At one time I would and did recommend Audio Technica to everyone since I thought their brand was built around quality, but now that I have discovered how prevalent this issue is, and how they use the same tricks to suck profit from consumers as every other big company, I advise everyone I know to avoid their products.

I’m no audiophile, and these were probably the most expensive headphones I’ve purchased at $200 Canadian. But I really don’t get the huge hype about these though… I guess there is still an argument for good value even at $200. I don’t think the sound quality is the best, as it favors more towards exaggerated (but not so overwhelming like some other headphones) bass sounds, a bit too “bassy” which can also slightly distort music. Not the crispiest of sounds. They are pretty good for music, but I think they fair better for gaming and home theater etc. as the sound is a bit more “FX” oriented, rather than, crisp and clear. (Hope that made sense)

Have them for three years now, and I use them about 3 to 5 times a month on average, and the built quality has held up pretty well. There are some thin plastics though at ‘volatile’ joints of the headphone, so I am nervous, one day a plastic may crack etc. But until then, the quality is holding up quite well! The thin leatherette material for the ear muffs has also fared well against common use and wear and tear; they are still all intact and not flaking or cracking etc.

One of the main complaints I have with these headphones is comfort, they may sit well and fit snugly on your head, but they do tend to be a bit on the heavy side, and more importantly since they are “closed” over the ear models, they can get really hot and sweaty and uncomfortable during long sessions of use. (Like watching a movie or gaming over an hour) I find myself removing them every 20 minutes to half hour to make my ears “breath” and cool down.

Pros: Built Quality, if you treat them well and not abuse them, they should last you two decades. More catered for gaming rather than music (This could be a Pro or a Con depending on what you’re looking for)
Overall good quality sound, and good headphones to have around your TV/PC to watch a movie or play a game without distracting others in the house.
Cons: A bit bulky and heavy, not recommend for carrying around everywhere (for travel or commute)
Discomfort during longer sessions of wear… Can really put lots of pressure on your ears, you may find yourself removing them often and taking breaks.

This headset is simply perfect for the price range. They sound incredibly good, not too much bass like beats and good audio quality that will make you enjoy your music a little more.

In addition, a great advantage, the way the headphones folds is perfect for traveling and carrying the headphones. It even comes with a carrying bag to avoid scratching the product on the move.

Another great benefit is the selection of cable that makes the use of headphones better for the type of use you make, such as simply listening to music on the move or audio production.

Me he devorado reviews enteros de buscar unos audífonos buenos, bonitos y baratos.

Simplemente me estaban decepcionando bastante.
