Over the years I have owned a fairly large variety of different firewalls. I started with consumer products and gradually moved towards the commercial product market.
I would say that this product can offer much more than anything for a comparable price, and more than a good deal of more expensive commercial devices.
pFsense is a dream to use on this thing. I have monitoring configured and I don’t think I have seen the CPU go past 25% ever. My environment is not too big, household traffic plus a small business. However, I do have OpenVPN set up with several users and it still runs everything without issue.
Speaking of VPNs, if you already have a firewall and are just looking to get a quality VPN box, this is a perfect fit. As it uses OpenVPN there are no additional licensing costs to worry about (as there are with so many other devices).
Finally, this thing looks super cool!

This product is NOT fully compatible with Pfsense or OPNsense. During the installation procedure you can choose from several keyboard maps (Belgian, French, Italian etc) but none of them work. So configuring an Azerty keyboard via the installer is not possible. The same installation software does install correctly on other appliances so there must be an incompatibility. I contacted Protecli and they are aware of the problem.

I’m very impressed by this device. The build quality is great. I have it mounted on my wall next to where my ISP is terminating Fibre to Ethernet. I’m able to get maximum speed from my ISP. I’ve installed pfsense on the device and have had zero issues running or configuring it.
I’d recommend this for anyone looking to separate their ingress/firewall from their home network equipment like WiFi devices.

I use the Protectli as my main router, I have multiple servers and other network appliances inside my network and need access from the outside, which is possible through the OpenVPN protocol, that is included in PfSense, which is the OS of my choice.
